Remember not long ago when we reported that Rogers had launched prepaid BlackBerry data, a first of its kind for Canada? Well, it seems as though they are following up on this promo by introducing the soon to be discontinued Curve 8520 on prepaid. Pricing is a bit high at $349.99, but comes with the standard $50 credit and a free Bluetooth headset on activation.

Jul 12th
Although the release date is up in the air, the Rogers online training deck called “Fast Track” has recently been updated to include how to sell the iPhone 4 and a short introduction to the new device for employees to start testing on.
Could this mean Rogers is still on track for an end of July release? Nothing is certain, but it is exciting news for both Rogers iPhone users anxious to get their upgrade and Blackberry users patiently waiting to take the leap.

Follow me on twitterRogers to Sponsor Cirque Du Soleil for the 2010-2011 Season
Jul 9th
The Rogers Wireless name is synonymous with innovation in Canada; Cirque Du Soleil has become a notorious global brand with shows spanning the globe, acrobats consistently pushing creative boundaries, and roots also originating in Canada. This being said it would make sense that these two benchmarks in Canadian history find some common ground and do something spectacular together.
This morning it was announced that Rogers will be the new sponsor for Cirque Du Soleil’s 2010-2011 season, beginning tonight with special showing of the act “TOTEM” in Montreal’s old port.
Cirque Du Soleil’s President and CEO Daniel Lamarre had this to say:
“In the past, Rogers provided us with very innovative wireless solutions. Rogers is now the official sponsor of our 2010-2011 Canadian Tour. We are confident that Rogers will provide the necessary support to increase the reach of our shows and our artists across the country.”
Rogers plans on leveraging this partnership by encouraging customers to buy tickets through their proprietary wireless box office and other mobile online platforms to be announced at later dates.

Follow me on twitterRogers Officially Announces Chat-r Wireless
Jun 30th
So the rumours are true: The already saturated Canadian market is about to become more competitive with the launch of another new wireless carrier. Chat-r will be a completely new division of Rogers Wireless with unlimited talk and text offerings, similar to WIND Mobile and Mobilicity.
With this addition, Rogers will try to capture even more of the Canadian market. Chat-r plans to launch in five major Canadian cities including Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver later this summer.
Here’s what you can expect from Chat-r on launch:
- Contract-free plans
- Unlimited talk and text only (no data) within Chat-r zones
- Independent customer care centers with an extensive retail presence
- Low cost handsets including: LG Sapphire, Samsung Gravity, and Nokia 2680 Slide
With this announcement many questions arise from my end, but I will save them for a future editorial. For now, I leave it to my loyal readers: What do you think of this announcement? Good move on Rogers’ end? Let us know.

Any users out there still adamant on not jumping the smartphone bandwagon? Well, Rogers does acknowledge your existence and still has a soft spot for you in terms of hardware. Our connect just sent us these pricing updates set to go live in a matter of days for the LG Xenon and Samsung Messenger, showing the Messenger dropping to a reasonable $19.99 and the Xenon to $29.99, both on 3 year terms of course. Though they are not the most powerful devices, both come loaded with features worth contracting for should wireless data not be necessary.

Rogers Wireless Launches Wireless “Amber Alerts” Text Notifications
May 27th
If you live in the Toronto area and drive on any of our major highways, you may notice the “Amber Alert” campaigns that go up on the illuminated traffic signs from time to time when a child goes missing.
The “Amber Alert” campaign started in 1996, when 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, was kidnapped outside her family’s home and brutally murdered shortly after. Arlington police proposed a quicker method of alerting the general public when occurrences like this happen. Since then the campaign has spread continent wide and is the popular method used to alert the public of a child’s disappearance, but up to today, has only been used on highways and via local cable news networks.
Effective today May 27, 2010, Rogers Wireless subscribers can take these notifications one step further with the launch of “Wireless Amber Alerts”, a new free way to do your part in helping abducted children get back safely in the arms of their families.
How it works:
You will receive a text message whenever an AMBER Alert is issued in your region. You will also receive a message when that same AMBER Alert is cancelled or if there is additional information related to the alert. Yes, the program is completely free and does not effect your text allotment for the month.
How to participate:
You need to opt-in via your computer or mobile phone to receive the AMBER Alerts. Here’s how:
- From your computer, go to www.WirelessAMBER.ca, enter your 10-digit mobile number (including area code) and click Submit. You will then receive a text message on your mobile phone with a four-letter validation PIN code. Enter the code on the website and click Submit. On the subscription page, you can modify your settings to select the provinces from which you would like to receive alerts.
- From your mobile device, text keyword “AMBER” to 26237. You will receive a link to a mobile site where you can confirm and modify your settings.

This Week In BlackBerry 5/15 - 5/21
May 22nd
This week started off with a nice surprise for Sprint users, when Sprint released the Bold 9650 for online ordering on Sunday! This was a full week ahead of the release date they gave of May 23rd. Sprint is still sticking to the 23rd for in-store release of the 9650. Unfortunately, this was a thorn in the side for many Verizon subscribers, being that Verizon has yet to announce the device. Verizons early upgrade started May 20th and will run until June 30th, so it would be great to see them release the 9650 in that window. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Still on the subject of the 9650, CrackBerry and BlackBerry Cool found out from 2 different sources that the Sprint 9650 comes unlocked right out of the box. This does not mean you can use it on Verizon’s network. CDMA is still Sprint only. However, with the use of a sim card, you can use the Sprint 9650 on any GSM network. You will be able to get EDGE only in the US, with the additional possibility of 3G overseas, depending on the network.
We also posted some exclusive pics of the 9800 slider showing the WebKit browser and BlackBerry 6. One of the pics of the WebKit browser is touting an Acid3 test score of 100/100! Hopefully this will make up for the mediocre browsing experience us BlackBerry users have had to deal with while other companies have been jumping ahead.

Rogers and Telus Both Officially Announce The Blackberry Pearl 9100
Apr 26th
With WES 2010 well under way we all know it’s going to be a busy week on the blog front. It’s only Monday morning and RIM has wasted no time officially announcing both the Bold 9650 and the Pearl 9100 respectively. With this being said two of the Canadian carriers have followed suit officially announcing their plans to indeed carry the Pearl 9100. Rogers official press release that they will be carrying the device went out this morning, with Telus’ being posted on their website not to long after.
Interestingly enough Telus has also announced that they will exclusively be selling the Pink version, with a possible Cancer Awareness marketing campaign. The device was originally speculated (with an inventory screen shot) at $79.99 on a 3 year term, Telus has officially announced a $29.99 price point, and I expect Rogers to follow suit on this one, though no formal pricing from Rogers has been announced.
I personally love this device, it’s slim and snappy and I think will be a sure fire hit, what do you think?
