Blackberry 9780 Saying Hello on Video
Jul 29th
Driphter was at it again this morning bringing us a video of the forthcoming 9780 running BlackBerry 6. They also have a comparison of the device next to the current 9700. This 9780 definitely looks nice and packs in a lot of cool new features. The video gives some more coverage on the webkit browser and it is looking great in the smaller screen. After yesterdays images of 6 on the 9650, it sure is great to see how this new operating system flows on the smaller screen.
I am slightly worried of all the real estate you lose on the home screen on the 480 x 360 display, as I am someone who likes a clear view of my wallpaper.
So what do you think?

First pictures of the upcoming BlackBerry Shield!
Jun 25th
BBNews.pl has secured some images of the upcoming BlackBerry Shield. For those of you who don’t already know, BlackBerry Shield will give users the ability to remotely protect their device if it is lost or stolen. There are also some additional functionalities. Hit the jump for further details.
Here’s a list of BlackBerry Shield’s functions that can all be executed remotely:
- View Current Location - Track your device based on the GSM transmitter and or GPS signal
- Loud Ring - Make your BlackBerry ring even if its set to vibrate
- Display a Message - Show a customized message on your home screen, even if your device is locked.
- Lock Device - Lock your device and optionally set a new password.
- Wipe Device - Permanently delete all data from your device.
BlackBerry Shield users will also have the ability to backup/restore data wirelessly from the device itself. All in all, BlackBerry Shield’s features are very similar to those of SmrtGuard, which can be kind of pricey. If BlackBerry Shield turns out to be friendly with battery usage and memory consumption, it be a win for most. SmrtGuard currently offers some additional features but they probably won’t be worth the money for the general population. BlackBerry Shield it also in its very early stages, so there will definitely be more features to come. There’s no word on any ETA for BlackBerry Shield or how it will be implemented. Stay tuned for further details.

This Week In BlackBerry 6/13 - 6/19
Jun 19th
I’m glad to see that some of TheCellularGuru readers and our in-house writer GuruJustin, took advantage of the Verizon free Bold 9650 upgrade! Keep in mind, all BlackBerry devices have a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty. As long as you don’t have excessive drop or water damage, you can have your device replaced if there is a hardware issue. It is very rare for a carrier to be out of stock on current replacement devices when they are ALL less than a year old, but lest call this a lucky loophole.

Mobimouse: Turn Your BlackBerry Into A Wireless Mouse & Keyboard
Jun 8th
Do you have a large computer monitor that you’d like to be able to control from a bit of a distance? Is your PC perhaps connected to your TV? Both of those questions are true in my case, which is why I’ve been using Mobimouse for about 2 years now. Mobimouse is an app that turns your BlackBerry into a wireless mouse and keyboard. I absolutely love laying in bed and controlling my PC from my BlackBerry. Sitting on my couch and controlling my PC while viewing it on my TV from afar, is wonderful as well. There are a few apps for BlackBerry that serve this purpose, but none of them can hold a candle to Mobimouse.
Mobimouse gives you the option to connect to your PC via WiFi, Bluetooth or USB. I always use the WiFi option, being that BlackBerry has some Bluetooth connectivity issues with some Windows platforms. The cursor movement is extremely smooth with trackpad and touchscreen BlackBerrys. Trackball BlackBerrys work great as well, but I find the texture of the BlackBerry trackball to cause the cursor to be slightly jittery. It’s not a problem with the app, as I find replacing the OEM trackball with a smoother rolling aftermarket trackball will alleviate this minor issue. When using Mobimouse, holding the alt key on your BlackBerry will give you scroll wheel capabilities and there is an option to control the cursor speed as well!
Not only can you control your cursor and type with your keyboard with Mobimouse, but you also have the option to customize your other BlackBerry buttons as shortcut keys to execute many Windows commands. You can customize your Send, Back, End, Mute and Volume buttons as well as your left and right Convenience Keys. If your BlackBerry has Rewind and Fast Forward buttons, (85xx for example) you can customize them as well. You can set the shortcut keys to execute Right Click, Tab, Page Up/Down, Volume Up/Down, some Alt & Ctrl Commands, and so much more.
I won’t bore you with the rest of the details. Instead go to http://www.mobimouse.mobi/ and download the Mobimouse 7 day free trial. Don’t forget, you need to download the app on your BlackBerry as well as your PC. Mobimouse works on all Windows platforms including 32bit & 64bit versions of Windows Vista & Windows 7. Have fun!

This Week In BlackBerry 5/23 - 5/28
May 27th
White 9700′s, Pearl 3G’s, Sprint 9650. RIM really hasn’t been playing around lately. They’re truly gearing up for a nice strong summer. It’s nice to see that both GSM and CDMA devices are being favored this time around. As for you Verizon subscribers, our friends at Berry Reporter just confirmed that Verizon will have the 9650 available via their website on June 3 and in store on June 10th! I know it seemed like the wait has been forever, after watching Sprint announce and release the device, but at least you now have an answer. It looks like we will also be seeing a GSM and possibly CDMA 98xx this summer. And don’t forget about BlackBerry 6. Hit the jump for what you may have missed this week in BlackBerry. Everyone be safe and have a nice weekend!

bit.lify for BlackBerry
May 13th
Sometimes I feel like the a lot of the tiny useful apps for BlackBerry go un-noticed. Well today I’m featuring bit.lify for BlackBerry. I’m sure most of you are familiar with bit.lify or some type of url shortening service. You twitter users probably have a twitter app for BlackBerry with a url shortening tool as well. That’s all well and good if you are posting to twitter, but what if you just want to send a shortened url somewhere else?
Whether you want to fit a link into an SMS, or look tech savvy in an email, you don’t really want to go through the extra steps of using a twitter client to shorten a url, do you? That’s where bit.lify comes in.
Once installed, bit.lify will always be in your browser menu. If you select bit.lify, you will have the option to Email, SMS, PIN, or Copy the url to the clipboard. Its that simple.
Bit.lify is one of those great little apps that I use multiple times a day, without really thinking about. The file size is very small at only 41.7kb. You can download bit.lify from Ubitiquous Systems OTA here.
Review: Bolt Browser For BlackBerry
May 13th
Bolt Browser is a Webkit based browser that has been available for a little over a year now. Bolt’s main focus is speed, and I must admit, it is fast. It is also a very lightweight browser taking up only .321MB on my BlackBerry.
Now Bolt isn’t the most visually pleasing browser, but how important is that to you? Do you really care how cool your browser looks and what the visual effects are, if there is something else out there that is just plain faster? With that said, one of the things Bolt prides itself on is that they never re-format web content, which means no option for mobile/column view. Now, me being a QWERTY BB user, I like my mobile view. I remember downloading Bolt the day it first released and not keeping it for that very reason. I have re-downloaded Bolt every time there was an update just hoping they added that option but always ended up disappointed and deleted it. When using a non-touchscreen device, I don’t want to have to scroll from left to right when viewing a web page. According to the Bolt forums, I’m not the only one that feels this way and I hope they eventually decide to give the users what they want.
Bolt 2.0 was recently released with several new features like streaming video, widget support, and tabbed browsing. Bolt now has web apps such as Wikipedia, twitter profile & search, Dictionary.com, and more. Bolt also has options to post a webpage directly to Facebook or twitter. Bolt is now up to 2.02 with another minor speed enhancement and now stays on my BlackBerry. My BlackBerry browser is still my first choice, but I sometimes use Bolt to view a page that the native BB browser has trouble viewing, or to open up an additional web page. All of which I wouldn’t need to do if BlackBerry would release their all new webkit browser already! Webkit for BB, where are you?! Bolt does render some sites much better than the current BB browser, but the only way to find that out is through trial and error.
If you’d like to give Bolt a try you can find it in App World or download it OTA at http://www.boltbrowser.com
