ÜberTwitter Beta-8/v0.98 has been released. I haven’t used ÜberTwitter in several months now and the changelog isn’t yet available, so I really can’t comment on the changes as of yet. There does seem to be some hype on Twitter right now, so if you happen to notice any changes please drop a comment. See the official word from ÜberTwitter below..

Ubertwitter Beta 7 Officially Released
Mar 10th
Considering this app is one of the most popular, free, and not by invite only twitter apps on the market, it’s no surprise how notorious Ubertwitter are for releasing updates. Welcome Beta-7, which went live this morning on their website. Interestingly enough Ubertwitter makes specific mention on their site that the Beta 8 update is right around the corner as well, being that It wasn’t that long ago that .964 was released on AppWorld I’m curious to know if that will be updated to this version or if Blackberry/Ubertwitter will wait for 8 to roll out before changing the download.
You can download the new Ubertwitter via your mobile browser by clicking here
If you have updated already please leave a comment and let us know your findings!
To see a list of the noted updates read on
- Java exceptions on device boot - Fixed issue where java exceptions would be reported on device reboot due to lack of permissions
- Opt-out of sponsored tweets - Users can now opt out of receiving sponsored tweets
- Goto User bug fix - Fixed bug where entering a user not in your timeline and then pressing trackball wouldn’t use the text you entered but instead find the closest match from your friends list
- Everyone Near You - Fixed bug where it wouldn’t uses your current location, and sometimes would revert to somewhere off the coast of Africa. Also increased the distance to a 10 mile radius, in the future we will let you select this.
- Mini-Icon Notification - Fixed bug where if the app didn’t have certain permissions not related to the mini-icon, it still wouldn’t show the mini-icon
- Fine-Tuned control of visual notifications - There are now three settings each for the mini-icon and application icon so you can fine-tune the control over how you want each to notify you. Also, the number next to the mini-icon will only reflect the number of new tweets of the type it is tracking. For example, if you only set the mini-icon to track new DMs, then the number next to the mini-icon will only reflect the number of new DMs.
- New short-cut for page-up - Added a new short-cut to page-up in the timeline, pressing ’0′ (zero) will now page up in the timeline
- Instability when using cell location - Fixed bug that would cause instability in the app when using cell tower location
- 3G Cell Tower Inaccuracy - Fixed a bug in the cell tower location mechanism when 3G towers were being used
- Symbol Screen - Again reworked the symbol screen
- Secure Connection - Changed the default Twitter endpoint so your traffic will travel over a secure HTTPS connection
- Deleting DMs - We now allow you to delete direct messages.
- Constant permissions requests - Fixed bug where every time the app was started it would ask for permissions.
The following changes have been made from 0.963 to 0.970

Did you guys see Unbreakable? You know, that M. Night Shyamalan (yea, that’s actually how it’s spelled – I had to look it up) movie from a decade ago with Bruce Willis playing a super hero – though he doesn’t know it at first. At the end of the movie, the villain (played by Samuel MotherF*n Jackson) gives a monologue about how he and Willis are the exact opposites (Willis being invincible – except for water, which is the most pathetic weakness ever and Jackson being more fragile than an icicle).
Why am I talking about this? Because these two polar opposites relate nicely to updates from my preferred Twitter app (SocialScope) and the one I used to use (UberTwitter). Getting a SS update is about as hard as getting the app itself, where as UT freely available and updated all the time.
I am curious though, how much can really be changed when you update something this often. I mean, obviously things change. If they didn’t, someone would notice and call them on it.
As all the Twitter apps move forward, there are a set of, almost, required features they have to have in order to stay relevant. Things like, making/managing lists, adding avatars from your phone or less battery/memory drain so I’m going to be focusing on the big steps UT has made lately.
One thing UT added recently (added in beta 6, bug-fixed in beta 7) was the integration with TwitLonger. This allows you to send tweets longer than 140 characters and automatically provides a link in your tweet to your miniature opus. This is really useful when retweeting or adding any sort of link and is the biggest reason I still have UT on my phone, even though it isn’t running unless I need to tweet something long.
Ok, wow. I was just reading over the .945 change log and I found the coolest thing ever – whatthetrend.com. You know how sometimes you seen a trending topic and have no idea who/why/what it is? This site tells you, and it now works with UT. For example, #Seuss is a trending topic because today is Dr. Seuss’ birthday! (Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!!)
So where would I rank UT, personally? As I mentioned before, I’m a huge SocialScope fan. However, I was all about UberTwitter up until I got my invite. Having not tried Tweetissimo yet, I’d say UberTwitter is my second favorite app, but will always be on my phone. You know, just in case I have a lot to say.
