Palm Pre Plus Sold Out on Verizon and AT&T’s websites
Aug 16th
We don’t want to get our hopes too high with this one, but it’s certainly worth noting that the Palm Pre Plus is currently sold out on both AT&T’s and Verizon’s websites. While we absolutely want this to be an indicator that new webOS-toting hardware is ready to roll in for these two carriers, we can’t leave out the possibility that both carriers happened to run out of stock at the same time. Plus, while the phone may be sold out online, as far as we know stores are still selling Pres as usual. For now feel free to speculate, but for me, until Sprint follows suit with the older original Palm Pre I’m not convinced.

Verizon wants to replace users’ dumphones with Palm handsets
Apr 5th
After last week’s news that Verizon slashed Pre Plus and Pixi Plus prices, it’s certainly no secret that Palm and Verizon are working together to boost Palm’s sales numbers. Today Precentral received an anonymous tip saying that come April 6th, Verizon will be offering the two-year subsidized prices for many dumphone-touting individuals. Basically if you aren’t using a 3G smartphone currently, and have had the line for at least 6 months without buying a subsidized phone in the last year, you are eligible for your choice of a discounted Palm Pre Plus or Palm Pixi Plus. Not a bad deal considering the phones ring in at $49.99 and $29.99 respectively.
Keep in mind however, that going through with the deal will extend your contract for another two years and you will not be eligible to purchase another subsidized phone for a full year. That said, this is still a pretty killer deal for customers that have locked themselves into a seemingly inescapable two-year contract with an under equipped feature phone or crappy flip phone. If you have been waiting for that contract to end and you meet the requirements, this may be a perfect time to jump to the WebOS. Tack on the free Mobile Hotspot app that Verizon and Palm are now offering and you have yourself one heck of a good deal.
We don’t generally talk about WebOS here on The Cellular Guru, but rest assured we stand behind Palm’s latest endeavor and, for no other reason than to root for the underdog and to respect a good product when we see it, we’d love to see the platform prosper (especially over other burgeoning, unncessary ones *ahemBADAahem*). This Verizon push, coupled with the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus coming to AT&T in the next couple months, proves that their last gasp may indeed be a powerful one.
Verizon slashes Pre Plus and Pixi Plus prices, make Mobile Hotspot free
Apr 1st
It’s looking like a big week for WebOS. Yesterday we reported about WebOS 1.4.1 dropping and today we have some love to help Verizon users cope with their omission in the update’s release. Today Verizon cut the prices of the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus. The Pre Plus has dropped from $149.99 to $49.99 while the Pixi Plus dropped from $79.99 to $29.99. There wasn’t a huge cost difference between the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus before, and now it is even more negligible. I’m guessing most users won’t consider the Pixi Plus when the Pre Plus is just twenty dollars more. Regardless, this is a good move for Palm, and it makes the WebOS devices even more compelling for those considering a smartphone on Verizon.
In addition to these price cuts, Verizon has dropped the price of the Mobile Hotspot application from $40 a month to $0 a month. This is probably the most exciting part of Verizon’s price drops. With the Mobile Hotspot application Pre Plus and Pixi Plus owners can connect any WiFi enabled device to their device and share their device’s data connection. To enable the feature you have to go into your Verizon account and manually add the feature. After that you can get the application from the App Catalog, and you’re free to tether yourself silly. Keep in mind that there is a 5GB cap and you will be charged for exceeding that limit.
These price changes could really be the boost that Palm needs. Palm said that they were working with carriers to increase their sales numbers and that’s exactly what seems to be happening here. Free tethering makes the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus much more compelling. For no extra cash you essentially get a full-blown MiFi built into a great phone. Only time will tell how this affects Palm’s numbers, but it certainly can’t hurt.
Analysts turning their backs on Palm due to lackluster sales on Verizon.
Feb 24th
Despite all the optimism that came with Palm’s choice to bring WebOS to Verizon, hopes are now fading among analysts. These analysts claim that the sales numbers for the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on Verizon are not as glorious as they had hoped and that Palm may be on the way out if they keep this up. Verizon didn’t launch the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus with much advertising heft, that is unless you count the “Smartphone Smart Enough for Mom” campaign hefty. Granted, there was the BOGO deal right out the gate, but apparently even that couldn’t spark enough sales to satisfy analysts expectations. Perhaps if Verizon hadn’t been so head-over-heels for the DROID series at the time, then the WebOS devices would have shined a little brighter.
What is it going to take for Palm to turn things around? New hardware? New carrier support? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments!
