Froyo Hitting More Devices. Onto the next one!
Aug 3rd
Froyo has officially hit the EVO 4G on Sprint (earlier than expected, no less!) and word has just reached us that the original Droid has started receiving the OTA update as well. Now all that’s left is the Droid X and the triumvirate of killer Android smartphones will have the latest and greatest of both hardware and software. It is also expected that when the Droid 2 ships on August 12th, it will come with Android 2.2 pre-loaded onto the device.
The update to Froyo seems less fraught with drama than the Eclair update to the Droid, and proves that when the carriers work with the manufacturer and the provider efficiently, things actually get done. I think the multiple-times delayed rollout of the Android 2.1 update for the Droid taught Motorola and Verizon a big lesson.
According to Android Central, the steps are pretty simple:
- Grab the update file
- Place it on the root of your SD card
- Power down, then restart while holding the X key to get to the bootloader
- When you see the exclamation mark, hold the volume up button and press the camera button
- Choose apply sdcard:update.zip
- Ignore the cache error
- Reboot
Easy peezy.

HTC EVO 4G and HTC Droid Incredible Hit With Screen Issues
Jun 15th
While the HTC Incredible may be immune to the screen issues that affect the Nexus One, it looks like there is a new and potentially more annoying issue which affects not only the Incredible, but it’s new big brother, the HTC EVO 4G. The new problem has to do with faulty grounding in the screens of both HTC devices causing the upper portion of the screen to become unresponsive when not being held. As you can see from the picture above, this causes some serious problems when you’re not actually holding the device and can make simple tasks like pulling down the notification shade impossible.
Seriously, can anyone actually push out one of these “superphones” without all the hiccups we’re currently seeing. Maybe Motorola? Samsung? Anyone?
Hit the break for the depressing footage.

We Giveth You EVO 4G Root, and We Taketh Away
Jun 4th
Interesting developments from the EVO 4G launch this morning: Sprint is releasing an OTA update to fix a bug in the reading of SD cards on the device, which would sometimes cause the phone to be unable to read anything put into the MicroSD slot. This small fix, however, has the added bonus of patching the root that was discovered and outed yesterday.
UnrEVOked, a person/site that has emerged to promote the root, is urging people NOT to download the OTA update if they mean to keep their root.
And the phone looks to be doing extremely well, judging from all the lineups around the US.
HTC EVO 4G Employee Training Lit From Radio Shack - So, So Sexy
May 11th
A tipster has generously forwarded us a few scans from the Radio Shack training manual employees are expected to peruse and get to know for the EVO 4G debuting next month on Sprint.
Not a lot of new information here, but it just reinforces what we already know: the HTC EVO 4G is going to be one screaming fast, sexy phone. Remember, this is going to debut just after the iPhone HD is announced, and the latter’s front-facing camera will likely influence other people to use video conferencing apps. The EVO 4G has a front-facing camera, and everything else about it screams HD quality: its kickstand; its HDMI out; its Flash support (though it’s only Flash Lite); its 8MP rear camera with 720p video capture.
And it has built-in 4G Mobile Hotspot! Allows eight devices to connect to its 4G connection through Wi-Fi.
This is going to be one kick-ass phone.
Hit the break the week two to four.
Remains Of The Day: Pre Plus Goes Rich, Sprint’s Nexus Lack, Moto’s Squared Jaw
May 10th
Today was an interesting day.
The Palm Pre Plus was officially announced for AT&T at a ridiculous price of $149.99 on a two-year contract. Why would they have posted this aging phone at an almost-iPhone price? Because they’re going to market out as a new device, that’s how. The device launches May 16th.
The other major carrier news today was that Sprint will not be carrying the Nexus One in light of the imminent release of the EVO 4G. This coming only seven weeks after they announced the phone officially. Well, I suppose anything goes when you’re dealing with Google.
The other juicy bit of news was the realization that Motorola’s crazy-looking flip phone was in fact real, and that it has a name: the Flipout. Aiming at the teen market (an Android-based Kin One and Kin Two competitor, perhaps) the Flipout will sport a 2.8″ QVGA screen, a 700MHZ processor, 256MB RAM, 3MP camera, and of course, a QWERTY keyboard. Could be a nice little one-two punch.
The Telus Pearl 3G will be debuting in stores tomorrow, May 11th, though it will be a soft launch. Employees confirmed to me personally that the phone will be in stock and available for $49.99 on a three-year contract.
Android Froyo On Its Way Next Month, 3.1 Next Up?
Apr 21st
Apparently Android 2.2 will be rolled out next month, May 19 to be exact, at the beginning of Google IO, the Google-centric conference kicking off in San Fransisco on the same day. There are already test builds going around, and rumoured features include access to more internal RAM, FM Radio support and OpenGL 2.0 features. The Nexus One will likely get the OS first, but it should be rolled out to more phones as the OS gets more mature.
On the other front, there is a rumour going around that the Sprint HTC EVO 4G will ship with Android 3.1 (see picture), though I think that’s a photoshop and ain’t gonna happen. Take a look at the date: January 25th, on T-Mobile? Why would they be testing 3.1 on a T-Mobile device if it was supposed to go to Sprint, a CDMA carrier? But we’ll have to wait till June to hear about it.
And, while we’re on the subject, the HTC Hero update to 2.1 has been delayed again, this time till an early June timeframe. At this point I think it’s safe to say HTC hasn’t released the update to the wildly popular device as a strategic method to entice HTC fans to update to the Legend, which was released at the beginning of April in the UK and parts of Western Europe.
