Some of the best Android devices get the shortest life span, and it seems as though the very popular HTC Legend is seeing its final days as well.
According to the above inventory screenshot, due to supply constraints, the HTC Legend is being discontinued from Bell’s lineup of Android phones less than 3 months after being launched as a Bell/Virgin exclusive. The device hasn’t even received its update to Android 2.2!
A lot is left up in the air with this one causing some to question its validity, but factually speaking since the introduction of AMOLED screens to the mainstream, the components have become incredibly scarce, meaning Bell may be looking for a quick exit strategy to put focus solely on the recently released Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.
Unfortunatley, the Legend, like its predecessor the Hero, fit a certain small-handed niche in North America. Because Bell (and Telus before them) were the only carriers in North America to release the device, they became an importer’s dream down south, where neither of the phones were offered officially by a carrier.
Either way, the HTC Legend had a great run in Canada, you can read our review on it here or say R.I.P. and let is go to Android heaven with the recently demised Nexus One.
File this as a rumor because of the amount of delays thus far, but one of our solid Rogers connects just informed us that Rogers is planning to release the 2.1 update for the Galaxy Spica within the next month.
What you are seeing here is an invite recently sent to Telus employees for a hands-on training with the forthcoming 2.1 powered HTC Desire. No word yet on a official release date, but rumor has it pinpointed for a launch around the end of July.
Expect more information on this exciting device in the coming weeks.
Say Hello to T-Mobile’s new bread and butter, the Android powered myTouch 3G Slide. It is hopefully positioned to win back the market that was lost during Microsoft/Danger fiasco of last year, when its servers crashed and consumer mayhem ensued. The above chart confirms what we posted last week of a June 2nd roll-out date. Hit the break for some more highlights of the slide
The carrier’s Florida region has sold the most myTouch devices to date (47,262), but when you take a look at individual markets, Kansas City East has pushed the most with 6,911.
The Slide is being billed as the “first phone truly designed for Family customers.“
As with the original myTouch 3G, T-Mobile will be aggressively pushing a full suite of branded and customized accessories for the Slide. In fact, it’s asking reps to shoot for three or more accessories sold “out the door” with every phone.
You’ll see a ton of Slide advertising, both in-store and out on the town. A ton of it.
4,000 T-Mobile employees are being designated as myTouch “Champions,” including 2,200 in retail stores. These folks will know everything about the phone and work to “foster myTouch fanatics.” Careful what you wish for, guys!
Long-lead press (meaning print magazines, primarily) have been clued in to the phone since way back in March. Lucky devils.
The official launch is June 2, but it’s a rolling launch — there won’t be demo devices in the field until the 7th, for instance, and the ad campaign doesn’t kick off until the 16th.
June 19 is designated in all caps: “STAY TUNED — THIS WILL BE BIG.” We don’t know what this is all about; an upgrade to Android 2.2, perhaps? Yet another new myTouch model?
Overall, T-Mobile’s looking for 8 percent of its sold devices (its “handset mix”) to be myTouch 3G Slides. Seems reasonable.
The big question that remains is will the myTouch 3G win back the customers who may have already ditched town for the Kin? Or could this be the sure hit that T-Mobile needs? Let us know what you think!
You T-Mobile customers never had it real good when it came to Android devices. Sure, the Nexus One was released on your radio bands first, but the phone was never offered through retail channels, and therefore did not sell nearly as well as anticipated. Since the phone’s release five months ago, there have been a number of high-end Android devices released on various providers in the US: the Incredible on Verizon; the EVO 4G on Sprint; the Desire will be coming to US Cellular; the Nexus One was released for AT&T bands in March, and so on.
Now, the MyTouch 3G Slide, which is not a high-end device, but definitely fills a niche on the network, will be released on June 2nd for $179.99 on a 2-year contract. The phone is a 3.4″ HVGA (320×480) resolution screen, 5MP camera with autofocus, Android 2.1, and a nice slide-out QWERTY keyboard along with SWYPE on-screen keyboard pre-loaded.
The phone seems pretty nicely built, too. The interface is a customized Android 2.1, half-HTC Sense, half-stock Android.
