Rogers quietly launches the Blackberry Curve 9300
Aug 4th
Barely 24 hours has passed since excited Canadians found out that Rogers will carry the Blackberry Torch 9800, but that didn’t stop Rogers from quietly launching the Curve 3G earlier this morning ahead of schedule. I am interested in the strategy behind this quick launch, because it was only week or so ago that a picture surfaced of it on a Rogers Q3 flyer.
Either way this snappy little device is definitely worth the contract if you want the RAM and 3G speed connectivity of a 9700, in the discount shell of a Curve. It is launching at a reasonable $79.99 on a 3-year voice and data plan, or $399 as an outright purchase.

RIM is pushing the Torch harder than they have pushed any device in the past. CrackBerry was able to get their hands on a new AT&T Torch commercial which has yet to hit TV screens. Personally, I didn’t find the commercial very enticing. In my opinion, there’s too much focus on the slide out keyboard and not enough BB6, but I’m just one person. What did you think of the commercial?

Will the Torch burn out?
Aug 3rd
Remember those monolinths that AT&T received but were not to be opened? If you had guessed the BB Torch 9800 was inside, you are correct. RIM has been losing market share to Google and Apple recently and they’re banking on the Torch to stop the bleeding. Even though BB6 should bring back the crack, have too many of RIM’s followers already jumped ship and fallen in love with Android or iOS? There’s no question that RIM will still have some catching up to do in the touchscreen market, but do you think the Torch will be enough to at least help RIM hold down their current spot? Most international carriers run on GSM so I see why RIM is pushing the Torch before the Odin Refresh, but I’m sure plenty of CDMA Storm 2 users will make the jump to Android devices while the Torch 9800 sits pretty at GSM carriers. How many of you will be picking up the Torch on launch day?

Rogers, Bell, Virgin and Telus confirm the Blackberry Torch 9800
Aug 3rd
No surprise here now that AT&T and RIM have let the cat out of the bag, ALL the Canadian carriers have confirmed they will carry the new Blackberry Torch 9800.
Though no official release date has been announced, they all make mention of it being released in “the coming weeks”. So i’d imagine an end of Q3 launch.
We will update as we know more.

RIM Officially Announces the Blackberry Torch 9800
Aug 3rd
The day has finally come and announcement made.
August 12th, 2010 is the date to mark in your calendars for the official launch of the first Blackberry touchscreen/QWERTY hybrid now named the Torch 9800 running the new Blackberry6 OS.
Pricing set at $199 on a 2 year agreement, while outright cost has not been mentioned, I’ll assume it’s going to be around the $599.99 range.
Still no word on an official Canadian launch date, but expect it in the coming months.

A little pre-mature don’t you think? The event has barely just begun and the AT&T landing page has already been updated to showcase the newly named Blackberry Torch.

One of the most talked about, leaked about, and arguably the most anticipated Blackberry devices to ever be released from the gates of Waterloo, Ontario has finally gained FCC approval.
The timing couldn’t be better either because today in New York, Blackberry and AT&T are hosting a launch party rumored to be the one that officially announces both the Blackberry6 OS and the Blackberry 9800 (and all its code names)
Keep your eyes on the site for updates beginning at 11am EST.

Half of BlackBerry Users are Ready to Jump Ship to Android and iPhone
Aug 2nd
Today Nielsen let loose a few smartphone-related numbers from a recent study they conducted and things don’t look good for BlackBerry’s creator, Research in Motion. The results really aren’t shocking with just 42% of current BlackBerry owners looking to replace their current device with another BlackBerry, meanwhile 21% plan to pick up an Android device and 29% are hoping to switch to an iPhone when they get rid of their BlackBerry.
As a fan of BlackBerry I admit, I’m bummed to hear this, however, I’m not surprised one bit with the news. Research in Motion has done a piss-poor job making their platform enticing over the last several years. The truth is the last few OS upgrades have been drawn out, and relatively insignificant iterations of an already dated platform. While BlackBerry users are seeing trivial feature additions like threaded messaging, a bad attempt at a two-way Gmail sync solution, and a still unbearable browser; platforms like Android, iOS, webOS, and now even Windows Phone 7 are leapfrogging the once dominant BlackBerry.
I want to believe that BlackBerry 6 will fix all the problems and make the BlackBerry a competitive device again, but I’m just not sure it’s going to deliver all that. Sure, the browser looks decent (finally) and there are some built-in services like RSS, podcasts, and social feeds. But will it really hold a candle to current offerings? I’m afraid that it won’t. Application development is still absurdly difficult and unrewarding when compared to Android and especially iOS, and the iPhone definitely taught us how important a solid app ecosystem is to the success of a smartphone platform.
There are a lot of things that I like about BlackBerry-mostly the convenience and speed of messaging-but that’s not enough to keep most people from looking at alternatives that offer much more. Email used to be the BlackBerry’s one big dealmaker, but currently I think it falls behind both Android and the iPhone. I mean seriously, we still don’t have good HTML email viewing and two-way sync is a joke. Not only has RIM fallen behind with email but even integration with calendar, tasks, and contacts is non-existant unless you’re on a BES.
To sum this up I think RIM needs to either start really appealing to consumers or drop it entirely and just hammer on the best enterprise device available, because right now they’re just doing both poorly. If I can go ahead and contribute my vote to the survey, I’m with the 21% jumping to Android. I appreciate my BlackBerry, and I can’t wait for BlackBerry 6 to hit my 9650, but if given the choice right now I would buy an Android handset without a thought of buying another BlackBerry. I’m sorry RIM, but you did this to yourself.

Rogers trying to clear stock of Curve 8520. Curve 9300 around the corner?
Aug 2nd
Its not news that the Blackberry 9300 (Curve 3G) is launching imminently with all carriers in Canada. Recently, it has been spotted popping up on carrier websites, Q3 flyers and upcoming device roadmaps.
It is also nothing new that Rogers is very strict on selling ANY sort of data device without a contract.
Our Rogers connect sent us this bulletin that they just received showing a number of devices available for upgrade without the need for data, with the Blackberry Curve 8520 listed as $0 on a 3 year voice-only renewal. Chances are that Rogers is trying to clear stock as the device reaches its end of life with them, meaning that we could be seeing the 9300 in just a matter of weeks.
