Google aiming at 1 billion Android users, $10 billion yearly mobile revenue
This is ambitious, but when we talk about Google, we are often talking in astronomical numbers.
Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, refutes the claim that Google is a “one-trick pony,” responding that if they are a one-trick pony, “they picked the right pony,” he says. His goal is to monetize Android from advertising. $10 per user per year, with one billion users, is $10 billion in revenue per year. Extremely ambitious, but not out of sight.
They are already extremely successful at spreading Android to multiple countries, with many carriers. In fact, Google is activating 160,000 new users a day. So Android wasn’t so much a free, open-source operating system as it was an avenue to drive their mobile AdMob advertising platform, and it seems to be picking up steam, especially with the proliferation of location-based ads.
We’ll have to see how iAd does in the next year as it ramps up numbers with iOS4. But AdMob doesn’t seem to be taking Apple’s threats lying down.
Long live competition!

Android 1.6-powered LG Loop Arrives At Rogers

Does Rogers need another low-end, old-software Android device? Like I need a hole in the head. Which isn’t very much (though, reading press releases sometimes…). Perhaps what they need to do is take the devices they already sell, like the Samsung Galaxy Spica, HTC Magic+, Motorola QUENCH et al, and UPGRADE THEM INSTEAD. Uhem. On a
