AT&T Making Changes To Their 3G Data Plans, iPad Included
It was good while it lasted, right? Turns out the now infamous $30/Unlimited iPad 3G data plan that made Canadians cringe with jealousy is being quietly phased out by AT&T to make way for a new (less networking congesting) $25/2GB data plan, which, in all fairness is still more than enough for the average user and much better than anything found in Canada no longer competitive with Canadian rates of $35/5GB.
AT&T had this to say:
For new iPad customers, the $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.
This also affects existing cellular customers, too. New customers will choose between $15/200MB or $25/2GB, with an extra 1GB running $10. This allows AT&T to temper their customers’ voracious needs for data, especially when inundated with iPad customers, and shows them looking to take proactive measures to curb excessive data usage.
They’ve also taken a cue from their iPad plans and will allow customers to upgrade the cheaper plan to the more expensive one mid-month without penalty. According to Mark Collins, Senior VP of Data and Voice Services, most AT&T clients use less than 200MB, and 98% use less than 2GB.
The new plans takes effect June 7th, but don’t worry, if you have the $30 unlimited offer, AT&T will allow you to grandfather it.
