Arguably, the biggest news out of BlackBerry from this past BlackBerry Live conference two weeks ago was the announcement of BBM officially going cross-platform. While many wondered about the timing, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins went on the record with a statement explaining why the change of heart, ” For years people have associated the BlackBerry platform with BlackBerry Messenger. However, now with the successful launch of BlackBerry 10, we are confident in the ecosystem that we have, so much so that we are ready to separate the two and are ready to let them stand beside each other”.

BlackBerry now wants their 60 million+ loyal BBM users to help spread the good word that BBM is indeed heading to other platforms. A few new display gifs have been created – “BBM for All” and “BBM is coming soon to iOS and Android” – that urges BBM addicts to download and set these as their BBM or social network avatar to help hype up the pending app.

I will be interested in seeing how loyal BlackBerry users’ actually are when BBM does go cross-platform.
