The long-awaited and oft-leaked Motorola “X Phone” is now kinda sorta official. During an interview with Walt Mossberg at the D: All Things Digital conference, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside revealed that the company’s next flagship smartphone will be called “Moto X”, and will arrive “by October”. Even bigger news: the device will be manufactured in a Fort Worth, Texas facility that previously assembled Nokia phones. Woodside was proud to note that Moto X will be the first smartphone built in the United States, though some of its components will come from overseas suppliers.
Aside from the name, Woodside was fairly conservative with details. He did reveal that the Moto X will be packed with large array of sensors, making it “contextually aware”. For example, the phone can detect if you are driving, jogging, or sitting down, and promote different interactions accordingly. Woodside even went so far as to say the phone will ”know what you want to do before you do.” Exciting, or scary? He also revealed that the phone will pack dual processors, which will work together in some fashion to improve battery life.
As for what the device looks like, we’ll have to wait a little longer to see it for real. Woodside teased that he had one in his pocket during the interview, but alas he refused to show it off. Also no word on whether the Moto X will ship with stock Android, as earlier leaked shots have suggested. Woodside did mention that the device will be “widely distributed” on a number of carriers worldwide - a change for Motorola, which in recent years has focused their efforts on the North American market.
