Despite rumours of the contrary, an LG executive has confirmed today that the company is not working on a new Nexus smartphone for Google, according to TheNextWeb. The news comes from an interview with Won Kim, Vice President of LG Mobile in Europe, who told All About Phones that “The Nexus 4 was a great success… however we do not need such a marketing success again”.

Kim’s comments contradict earlier rumours that Google and LG were already hard at work developing the Nexus 5. An LG spokesperson told TheNextWeb that while the company is not working on the Nexus 5 right now, that “doesn’t mean we would turn down the opportunity”, suggesting that Google has decided to go elsewhere for their 2013 Nexus phone.

So if not LG, who? The obvious answer would be Motorola, now owned by Google and rumoured to be working on high-end stock Android smartphones. Google could always turn to previous Nexus partners HTC or Samsung, or give another company like Sony or Asus a shot. The most interesting scenario, however, would be that the Nexus program as we know it is finished. Google and Samsung recently announced a stock version of the Galaxy S4, and a similar variant of the HTC One is reportedly on the way as well. Could this be the future of the Nexus program: Google partnering with OEM’s to release stock versions of their flagship devices? Sound off in the comments, or hit us up on Twitter!
