Rogers and Fido roll-out “HD Voice” phone call upgrade

Yesterday my call quality sounded different. Not worse; just different. Off if you will. At first I figured that it may be another defect of my iPhone 5 (I am currently on my 3rd device), until I both crowd-sourced it, and did some research, to discover that Rogers had gone ahead and upgraded users with compatible phones to HD voice. What is HD Voice? Essentially the network is able to suppress background noises on certain compatible devices.
I reached out to Rogers and got this response:
“Rogers Network is capable of supporting HD Voice for devices that are HD voice compliant. Customers with handsets that support HD voice will experience clearer call quality and enhanced suppression of background noise. This feature is only available between two 3G/4G handsets on our network that are both HD voice compliant.”
Ironically, MobileSyrup also discovered this new feature and posted the Rogers/Fido handsets which are compatible with HD Voice, they are listed below:
- Samsung Galaxy Nexus
- Apple iPhone 5
- Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
- Nokia X7-00
- HTC EVO 3D (PG86310)
- HTC Raider (PH39150)
- Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
- Sony Ericsson Xperia U
- Nokia N8-00
- Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro
- HTC One S (PJ40110)
- Motorola Quench
- Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S
- Sony Ericsson Xperia S
- Sony Ericsson Pro
- Sony LT28i Xperia Ion
Again, I’ve been using “HD Voice” now for about 24-hours and notice the change, however find it a bit weird and can’t put my finger on why it isn’t sitting with me. Hopefully this is something I just need to adapt to.
If you’ve noticed the change as well let me know below in the comments.
