Usually when my friends ask me about the different carriers in Canada and who the best one is to go with. I can never recommend one carrier over the other (among the major players) as they are all more or less the same and this week, they confirmed it for me.

Tuesday Rogers announced a new monthly service plan (MSP) that offers the following:

6GB of Mobile Data, Unlimited Canada Wide; My10 Calling; Unlimited 6PM Evening and Weekend Calling; 200 Weekday Minutes; Unlimited Messaging.
Today Virgin Mobile (Bell Flanker Brand) began offering an MSP that offers the following:

Unlimited Incoming Calls; 300 Anytime Minutes; Unlimited 5PM Evening and Weekend Calling; Unlimited Messaging

Today Bell has also began to offer the same plan as Rogers

6GB of Mobile Data; Unlimited Canada Wide My10 Calling; Unlimited 6PM Evening and Weekend Calling; 200 Weekday Minutes; Unlimited Messaging

Please tell me where the actual competition is in the wireless industry in Canada. Surely to god people notice that no matter where you go, pricing and features are all the same…..

Not to mention our crappy 3-year terms. And the only real shot at a decent plan is to either go with someone like Wind or Mobilicity, or get some sort of retention plan from the big 3. Even with Wind or Mobilicity, you can’t really leave the major cities without getting huge roaming fees.

Not if you go with Wind, Mobilicity, or (I assume) Videotron (for those living in Quebec.

The time has come for the feds to start taking back some of the unused spectrum that the “Big 3″ Carriers are sitting on. They never paid for any of that spectrum (and I am talking about the 800-900MHz spectrum), so the carriers can’t claim that they will lose money. Then turn around, and auction that off. This will give Wind and Mobilicity a chance to get some lower frequency spectrum that is unused currently anyway, and allow them to offer more competitive handsets. The Big 3 have all of the advantages of better coverage and easier availability of handsets, while Wind/Mobilicity/Videotron have the more limited coverage, and relatively few AWS handsets.

I don’t have a problem with the Big 3 in and of themselves, just with their refusal to compete with each other. That lack of competitioin is what is leaving consumers wtihout any real choice in picking a carrier.
