It’s getting rather tedious continuously writing reviews about iPhone cases.

How many times can designers take an idea make it theirs, and of course put it to market, without seeming like a total copy of everything else? This especially when it comes to the wallet-style cases, which it seems everyone and their mother has tried to make and sell. In the last year I’ve had the chance to review the Smrtr case, the ID credit card case from Case-Mate, and one of my personal favorites, the Wallet Slim from Sena, all made to fill one specific life pain: making things more convenient.

So the question is, did Incipio nail it with the Stowaway? Or are they doomed to be dropped into the pile with the rest of the wallet-style cases? Read below to find out my thoughts.

Design:

It does indeed add some bulk. Incipio took cues from the famed Otterbox collection of “Commuter” cases: mixing a protective rubber skin with a tough plastic shell, this then topped off with a back that opens up to a well placed spot for up to 3 cards (fully utilizing the flat back of the 4S). I think it works great, and almost allows me to accept the added bulk in my pocket.

As for the aforementioned card holder door, it does exactly what it sets out to do: protect your shiz. Yes, I worried at first that it would break easily (being just a piece of thin plastic) but low-and-behold, the door held strong; even after absorbing some minor abuse.

Usability:

In comparison to the other in-market cases which offer essentially the same service, the only qualm I had was the boxiness it adds to the physical appearance the of the phone. Then again, what do you expect when you want both durability and functionality? Another notable feature of the usability is how easy it is to actually install the case on the phone. I for one get a bit jaded by any case when the installation isn’t 1,2,3 easy; the stowaway case takes out the 3rd step.

Price Point:

At $34.99 online it comes across a bit high, but offers both protection and functionality not found in other cases at the same price point in its category.

Overall:

Incipio is known to make good products, and offer customer service that almost matches their quality. I think Incipio hit it on the head with this case and would recommend it to anyone on the market for something strong, practical and budget-friendly.
