RIM acquires NewBay, a Cloud based service provider

NewBay is a cloud service provider that operates out of Dublin Ireland, employing 200 of their own employees and already dealing with T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and Deutsche Telekom. Their service, dubbed LifeCache, provides cloud backup, organization, and sharing services for digital media such as photos, and videos.
Given the success (or anticipated success) of Amazon and Apple’s Cloud services, the move may point towards plans by RIM to introduce a similar service to users of their platform. As a long time BlackBerry user myself, I am well aware that unless you are running your device on a BES, quality OTA solutions are hard to come by. If RIM can take their recent focus on deep integration seen with the push for “super apps”, and combine it with a cloud-based service that wirelessly pushes calendar, contacts, and media to our devices, it could make for a powerful new service, putting RIM one step closer to coming in line with the “complete package” being marketed by its competitors.
Not much to go on here, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for more developments.
