AT&T continues “4G” branding campaign, working with Apple on iPhone 4S

AT&T has had a real hard-on for the 4G branding they have been pushing to their subscribers, even though their HSPA+ coverage doesn’t technically fall into that category. Their current LTE rollout only adds to the general confusion, with subscribers being told by marketing that they are getting 4G on two different network technologies. Apparently, AT&T is now “working with Apple” to have the network indicator on the new iPhone 4S changed to show “4G” even when on HSPA+, bringing their branding strategy right into iOS. Whether Apple will actually do this or not remains to be seen, but at the end of the day they can make the indicator say “POOP” and it really won’t matter. The network is the network, no matter what letters they use.
