Bloomberg reports on PlayBook native email, Android compatibility on QNX smartphones
A couple of rumours coming down the tubes today from Bloomberg, reporting that a PlayBook OS update bringing a native email client is scheduled for a September release, and that future QNX-based BlackBerry devices will have Android compatibility.
Since the PlayBook’s launch, users wanting to access their mail on the tablet have needed to bridge with their BlackBerry smartphone or utilize webmail services in order to do so. Despite teasers at BlackBerry Worlsd 2011 showing the native email client at work on the PlayBook, nothing has been seen since the PlayBook’s launch several months ago. The latest rumour indicates that it may not be far off, with Bloomberg tossing out September as the probable timeframe for it.
Also reported is the likelyhood that QNX-based BlackBerry devices, such as the rumored Colt, will have Android compatibility. This really doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that the PlayBook has an Android App Player in development. Still, it proves to be an interesting bit of news for those looking to obtain one of the eventual QNX-based BlackBerry devices, with an entire application market being available to them on top of that already existing in the BlackBerry ecosystem.
