Verizon iPhone sales slow as iPhone 5 approaches

Since its launch on February 2nd, the iPhone 4 has proven to be a tremendously popular smartphone for Verizon Wireless. But just five months later, sales of the device have begun to cool off. Speaking to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Goldman Sachs analyst Jason Armstrong said that he expects Verizon will announce it sold approximately 2.2 million iPhones in the second quarter. If that number sounds familiar, it’s because that’s roughly the same number of iPhones Big Red sold in its first seven weeks of availability. So what’s behind the drop? Apart from the natural slowing of sales for older devices, many potential customers are adopting a wait-and-see attitude, preferring to hold off on an iPhone purchase until the next model is introduced. Exactly when that will be is still unknown, but the general consensus is that it will be announced and available for purchase sometime this Fall.
