PayPal Study Finds That A Majority of Canadians Are OK With A Cashless Future.

PayPal Canada has just released the results of a market research study they commissioned to be conducted by the firm Leger Marketing. The study was to ascertain Canadians’ feelings on never handling physical cash again and going entirely electronic when shopping, i.e. using a “digital wallet”.
The results of the survey were that 56% of Canadians responded that they would be comfortable with never having to deal with physical money again and go completely digital even when giving money to others.
Within that number 34% of Canadians would rather carry a mobile phone to make a purchase rather than a pocket full of change – a very serious concern for us Canadians who have had our $1 and $2 currency moved from paper bills to coins at the end of the 20th Century. A more interesting number is the 36% of people who said they would buy something as expensive as an iPod (valued in the survey at $272.30) with a digital wallet.
Convenience was what is driving the digital wallet’s popularity, the survey found, and according to the released figures a PayPal mobile transaction happens once almost every minute in Canada – pretty astounding.
It is free to open a PayPal account and there is a PayPal mobile app available for the iPhone, Android or Blackberry all which are completely free to download.
How was this survey done? According to the release we received, the survey was completed on-line from May 9th to May 12th, 2011 using Leger Marketing’s online panel, LegerWeb, with a sample of 1512 Canadians 18 years of age or older. A probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of +/- 2.5%.
