What will happen with Textie now that we have iMessage?

About two weeks ago Apple announced iOS 5 at their annual WWDC conference. Aside from a few updates, not much was too groundbreaking in terms of announcements - except for the introduction of their new instant messaging feature aptly called: “iMessage”. This product was what iOS fan-boys had been patiently waiting for and would finally be a core instant messaging application for iPhone users to talk to each other with free of charge. iMessage worked using the idea that users could message each other using their email addresses (or phone numbers), without the hassle of filling up their email inboxes - kinda (actually exactly) like Textie. As you see, it isn’t the most original idea, but it worked nonetheless. This lead me to ponder “ok, so iMessage essentially replaces Textie, so what will happen with Textie?” Apple did NOT buy them out and they did not go under, so where are they now? As it turns out, I was scrolling through Engadget this morning and stumbled upon a review of “MightyText”, a chrome extension app that talks to your Google account and let’s you send/recieve texts straight from your computer using your current phone number! So naturally, i read on. Low-and-behold “MightyText” is actually “Textie” re-branded into a full-functioning desktop app, rather than being strictly for mobile - which is what Textie was. Yes, Textie is still available to download for iPhone, I just doubt anyone is still going to actively use it with the introduction of iMessage, and I assume it’s a matter of time before it’s officially taken down.
The one downside to this is that Mighty Text is still in beta, (I put a request in and patiently wait for a response) so I wasn’t able to actually use it (though I did download it) and now since being featured on Engadget, they are a bit bogged down with requests, so it may take a while till I (or you) do.
For now clicking here to sign up for the beta and clicking here to download the app from Google’s Chrome web store will have to suffice.
