Proposed Bill To Require Carriers to Clarify What is “4G”

4G, we’ve spoken about it numerous times on this blog solely based on how excessively it’s used as a marketing term by carriers - both in Canada and the US respectively. Well it turns out Rep. Anna Eshoo, a Democrat from Palo Alto, Calif., and the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology is just as annoyed with its lack of both clarity and meaning and wants to implement a “Next Generation Wireless Disclosure Act” in the United States. The proposed new disclosure would work like a sticker on a new car, on which the government requires dealers to place fuel economy and safety information. Eshoo stated: “Consumers deserve to know exactly what they’re getting for their money when they sign-up for a 4G data plan,”We need to enhance transparency and ensure consumers are fully informed before they commit to a long-term service contract.”
It’s a known fact that most consumers have no idea what “4G” actually means, leaving them in the dark as to what they are getting for their termed commitment.
Let’s hope this bill does get passed and implemented. Many American wireless trends have grown to be adopted here, this one should be no different, as Canadians deserve the same right to full wireless disclosure that Americans could potentially get.
