Mobilicity Urges Ontario’s Government To Protect Wireless Consumers Like Manitoba & Quebec

Mobilicity just released a statement about how they are throwing their support behind the pending Ontario Bill 133 put forth by Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) David Orazietti which has the full name of the “Wireless Phone, Smart Phone and Data Service Transparency Act, 2011″. They also went on to say that they applaud the Manitoba government’s proposed Bill 35, fully known as “The Consumer Protection Amendment Act (Cell Phone Contracts)” - both are available to be fully read directly from the respective government websites in the links below.
In the statement, Mobilicity tells of how it contacted the Ontario Minister of Consumer Services the Honourable John Gerrettsen after he had met with the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) - aka L’Association Canadienne des Télécommunications Sans Fil (ACTS) in French - and how Mobilicity fundamentally disagrees with the position that the CWTA maintains in regard to consumer protection laws. The CWTA’s position is that “consumers are better served by open competitive markets and a self-regulated wireless industry with a strong Code of Conduct.” Mobilicity has stated that they believe that the industry’s current self-regulating and ‘strong Code of Conduct’ has proven completely ineffective in protecting the Canadian consumer.
Dave Dobbin, the CEO of Mobilicity, wrote to the Minister that even though his company is a member of the CWTA, they stand “far apart” on the issue from their colleagues in the CWTA. He went on to say that in this matter the CWTA “has completely ignored the dissenting opinions of new entrants such as ourselves.”
Bill 133 would require that Canadian wireless carriers provide clear disclosure [to consumers?] of all optional and mandatory services as well as contract cancellation penalties and that they limit contract termination fees. Mobilicity strongly encourages that each of the provincial governments take steps to protect wireless consumers within their borders in the same way that Quebec and Manitoba already have.
