The switch has been thrown today turning on free, unlimited Wi-Fi in more than 1,000 McDonald’s Restaurants across Canada to encourage a better experience for all of McDonald’s’ customers.

The Wi-Fi hotspots have been put into place and is being operated by Bell who are also one of Canada’s largest retail hotspot provider. The move also makes McDonald’s one of Canada’s largest free Wi-Fi providers.

Although the initial number of locations enabled with free Wi-Fi doesn’t cover all of McDonald’s’ more than 1,400 Canadian locations the plan is to have more than 90% of their restaurants nationwide enhanced with fully operational and free Wi-Fi by the end of the month.

No purchase will be required to use the service. For added convenience, the new and unlimited Wi-Fi service features a one-click entry point that doesn’t require a username or password. I wonder if the Wi-Fi will extend out to the drive through lineup which can get pretty long in some locations.

The company also updated their Restaurant Finder on their website to include the option to search for locations with the free McDonald’s Wi-Fi (see below for the link).

The Wi-Fi in McDonald’s Canada is not much useful at the moment. It can only connect to Bell websites and McDonalds’ website… Sigh…

    Your Wifi is a tease.
I went on the site and there was an add for 50% off Tuscan Salad. (My favourite) So I went up to the counter and said I want 50% off my salad and Macdonalds said I need a print out coupon. The coupon was on the website which I could see, but could not print out as I was in Macdonalds. So I copied to site, then went home to find the site and it does not exist outside your Macdonalds Bell WiFi. So I could not get my salad for 50% off.

Here in the US Google;s search engine, Google maps, youtube videos along with the rest of the on-line world are at your fingertips, and the service works well with Linux computers…

Perfect to use a new android 3.1 running on a 10 inch tablet to watch and upload your youtube videos while enjoying lunch or an afternoon Ice tea…

I presume Canada will will have all this capability as does the US in the near future with this new nationwide service…

I would not imagine overseas visitors would have much use for Bell web service, but it certainly would be a place to use a standardized internet service and have meals while traveling in and about Canada…

Local McDonald’s has WiFi. Can’t connect with any device, can’t even get email. In store staff have no idea where the equipment is let alone how to reboot it. They also have no instructions on who to call if it doesn’t work. All in all a 0 out of 5. Recommend you go elsewhere, these guys are not serious.

why are you restricting out-going emails from your wifi cafes? the laptop cannot to theSMPT (out going server).

I tried different locations in Florida and Georgia this past Dec 2011, and they all worked fine, I could check emails, weather etc … However when I am back to Toronto, I tried one location and it just didn’t connect at all, I checked the signal strength and it was fine (3 green bars out of 5) ! What’s going on ???

  • Traveler

    OK, it’s Traveler again.

Finally I successfully logged on to McDonald’s free wifi in Toronto, but it took over 10 minutes before it allowed me to get free wifi. Prior to that, I didn’t see the “standard window” from Microsoft which indicates I am logged on (a window that displays Home etc etc …).

I almost turned off my computer to go to the Starbucks just on the other side of the parking lot, I always successfully log on to Starbucks’ free wifi without any problem.

So McDonald’s Canada might want to investigate why their free wifi software is so user UNFRIENDLY as opposed to McDonald’s USA which are very very users friendly !

Just tried to connect to a McD;s wi-fi hotspot in a small town in SW Ontario with a Blackberry Playbook tablet and also my smartphone….absolutely no luck. Tried this before I ordered any food. I would have been done my food and on my way out the door before it connected…..if it actually ever would. After 20 minutes of trying I gave up, ordered no food and left. Garbage, so far.
