Just read about this free app called “Zeitag TO” on BlogTO - a popular locally oriented Toronto area blog. The idea behind the app made by Octavo Productions is that if/when you’re out and about in Toronto and wonder what the area you’re visiting looked like decades or even a century ago you can now find out.

The app shows you where you are on an interactive city map of Toronto and shows you what sites nearby have historical photos on file. This is especially useful in the downtown core of Toronto where the photographs are a lot closer together so you can take a tour through the history of Toronto while also out for a stroll. The app includes more than five hundred pictures of the city from as far back as the 19th Century all the up to the 1980s. Each picture when viewed through the app includes information about it such as the date and the street. Some locations have photographs from several eras, and the app allows you to scroll forward or backward through the decades and ‘watch’ the changes in that location. Touch the Map button to go back to the map when you’re done.

The app is designed for both iPhone and iPad and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It requires you to have iOS 3.0 or later installed.

Live outside of Toronto and want in on this fun? Not to worry, this app is the first in a planned series for locations around the world.

I don’t have an iPhone or any iOS devices myself so I can’t express an opinion on if the app is good or not because I haven’t used it. Have you downloaded the app? What do you think of it? Let us know in the comments below.
