Review: Powermat Charging Kit for the BlackBerry Bold 9650

Review and pictures below written & taken by Spinz. Thanks so much for the product review!
Tired of having to plug your smartphone into the charger in order to charge the battery back up? Wouldn’t you rather simply place the device on a mat and have it begin charging on contact? Well, so did the folks at Powermat and they have a great wireless style charging system for many smartphones that are available today. While half asleep trying to plug my BlackBerry into the charger was not always a success and many nights the device ended up not making it on the charger, leaving me in a bad situation in the morning. This is when I decided to snag a Powermat and put these troubles to rest.
Upon arrival of the Powermat I was extremely excited to set it all up and see what it was all about as I had read all about it but never seen it live in action. The first thing I did was replace the stock battery door with the Powermat door which is what will allow the charging to take place once it is placed on the mat. Having to replace my stock battery door was not very thrilling to me, especially since I was adding a door that had a bulge in the back, and a nice big Powermat logo as well, but the pro’s of wireless charging outweighed the cons.
The mat which the device docked on was much smaller than I had anticipated, which was warmly welcomed as it wouldn’t take up much space on the end table. The slim design, and solid black appearance allows for it to blend in when not in use, making it desirable to store in nearly any location. On the top of the mat you will notice two small circles, one on each side in the center of the mat, these are the magnets which will hold the device in place to allow for proper charging. The 2X mat allows for charging of two different devices, and if you need to charge a feature phone, or don’t want to have to buy another battery back for your device the mat comes with seven additional tips as well as a receiver to allow other devices to charge as well.
After finally telling myself I needed to stop placing and removing the device from the mat just to hear the cool sound, I finally allowed the device to charge on the mat. Charging was very similar to having it plugged in, except when I got a message, or wanted to do something I didn’t have to remove any wires, I could simply pick the device up, do what I needed to do, and then put it back on to charge again. A great feature was that each side, since there are two separate chargers on the single mat, has its own LED indicator which allows you to easily visualize whether the device is still charging, or has finished charging.
Overall, the performance of the Powermat was exactly as I had expected, it charged the device easily, and allowed for me to not have to fiddle with wires each time I wanted to charge the device. The technology is very sophisticated and prevents your devices battery from overcharging, which is a huge plus for those of us who leave their device on the chargers overnight. The biggest downfall to me was the need to replace the battery door with one that added a bit of bulk to the device, along with a rather large logo, but that was a small trade off for the convenience gained. If you are looking for a great charging solution that allows you the freedom of not having to physically plug the device in overtime you want to charge it, be sure to pick yourself up a Powermat kit today!
