BBWC2011: BBM 6 To Launch On BlackBerry 7, Bring Foursquare Integration & More

CellGuru is, as you know, down at the BlackBerry World Conference in Orlando, Florida, and we have news coming in from him in regard to the upcoming version of BlackBerry Messenger (aka BBM). The new version of BBM, “BlackBerry Messenger 6″ will launch on the upcoming BlackBerry 7 OS (BB7 OS) devices such as the Bold 9900 and Bold 9930. It is expected that BBM6 is going to launch over the summer with the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930.
Here is what we know about about it so far:
- As mentioned above, it is official that BBM6 will appear on BB7 OS, so look for it on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Bold 9930.
- There will be integration with the popular location based game Foursquare.
- You will be able to share check-ins on Foursquare with your BBM friends. I assume this means even if they are not on Forusquare so it will be sort of like posting your check-in to Twitter or Facebook.
- Show check-ins (on Foursquare) as your (BlackBerry Messenger) status.
- Share (Foursqaure) badge list as well as your BBM contacts will be able to see recently earned badges.
- There will be integration with the Kobo e-reader a product whose majority shareholder is Toronto based Indigo Books & Music.
- You will be able to share with BBM contacts what book you are currently reading.
- Also, this new BBM will bring in the ability to use augmented reality browsers such as Wikitude to find BBM friends around the area and instantly connect with them.
All of this sounds really, really great but it makes me wonder if/when BlackBerry is going to be announcing some sort of Contact List segregation in BBM sort of like Facebook where you can drop people in different groups with different privacy settings. I won’t always want my boss or even co-workers to be able to see my Foursquare check-in for example while I would like my friends to be able to know that I am nearby. These two partnerships are definitely very interesting partnerships that is for sure but I am left to wonder how it will all work and if there will be anything special to BBM users only on Foursquare (or maybe it is just the augmented reality aspect?) that will make a Foursquare user want to have a BlackBerry with BBM 6 as opposed to just using Foursquare on a different smartphone.
Only time will tell.
