Rogers today announced the earnings for the entire company in the First Quarter of 2011. Obviously, being as this is a cellular blog we are going to concentrate on the wireless aspects but if you want the full release it is linked below.

In a nutshell: The wireless division added 45,000 net new postpaid subscribers, which included the addition of a record number of new smartphone customers. It also saw the wireless data revenue growth stay extremely strong increasing at a rate of 30%.

The wireless network revenue of the company grew 3% versus the same quarter last year.

Wireless data revenue growth accelerated to 30% and net postpaid subscriber additions totalled 45,000, helping drive wireless data revenue to now comprise 34% of Wireless network revenue.

During the Q1 of 2011, Wireless activated and upgraded 534,000 additional smartphones, of which approximately 36% were for subscribers new to Wireless, compared to 348,000 in the Quarter One of 2010. This represents the largest single quarterly addition of new smartphone subscribers. This resulted in subscribers with smartphones, who typically generate nearly twice the amount of revenue for Rogers on average per customer of voice only subscribers, representing 45% of the overall postpaid subscriber base as at March 31, 2011, up from 33% as at March 31, 2010.

This past quarter also announced the geographic expansion of the new high speed wireless network by 150 times to cover 96% of the Manitoba population.
