OK, this totally caught me by surprise and I do not know how I missed it before. Seems last summer, ya I really missed the boat on this one, Gowalla released a beta then a full version of their app for BlackBerry devices. The latest version of the app, version 1.24.0, was released March 10, 2025 and I really had zero idea until I happened upon it when doing research for something else entirely.

The app is available for pretty much all BlackBerry devices as long as they are running OS OS 4.3+ and are non-touchscreen devices. This last part seems to be referring to the Storm 1 & Storm 2 as I had no problem installing and using this 346 KB download on my BlackBerry Torch 9800 and the Torch is listed in the Supported Devices list of the app’s App World page.

A search of Gowalla’s own blog yielded the announcement of the full version release in August of 2010 and then no updated info since then on new versions of the app.

I also went to three other blogs that are solely devoted to BlackBerry news and info and couldn’t find anything about the release of this app since summer 2010 when version 1.0 came out.

In any case, I am picking up the ball on this now to let you know that the app is available as a free download in BlackBerry App World. So if you have any friends or family who have other devices who are big Gowalla users and you were never able to jump on board (or never realized you could) you can now!

I just downloaded it myself and I am going to give it a whirl. I have been a fairly heavy Foursquare user since I began using it early in 2010 and I remember, at the time, I was looking into the other Location Based Services’ apps* but chose Foursquare as it was the only one available for my BlackBerry as well as seeming to be the most popular.

* Of the major ones almost no one I know uses Google Latitude, BrightKite - still not available on BlackBerry but now has a mobile site, and Loopt - available on BlackBerry but only in the USA on Verizon, AT&T, MetroPCS, Sprint, and T-Mobile and I believe the whole service is US only.

The app seems to be well engineered and I just have to see if anyone I know really uses it. Quite honestly, from what I have seen thus far Foursquare is already dominating the Location Based Services war and someone on Twitter even mentioned to me that everyone who she has spoken to loves the app and the way it is beautifully designed and works well but doesn’t use it because none of their friends are on it. I guess for me only time will tell.

As usual, you can download the app by clicking the link below to go to its page in App World or you can scan the QR code below with your BlackBerry and be taken there directly.

Gowalla also has apps available for iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4; for the iPod Touch (same version as iPhone), for Android 1.6+; for Palm webOS v1.3.5+; and for iPad. Go to their site linked below for links to all those different versions.
