Since its humble beginnings late last year as a simple cross-platform messaging app, Kik has made quite the impact on the mobile scene. From quickly going viral (spawning over 1 million users in its first week of launch) to the ongoing legal drama (we all know the battle of supremacy with RIM) it has been through a lot while being run by its CEO, who at just 23 years old, has not only experienced more than some execs double his age; but has also kept a cool, calm and diplomatic approach to all of it.

Today, another milestone in his life has been reached; the recent millionaire has given back to his humble beginnings by donating $1M to Waterloo’s VeloCity residence, a residence-based mobile and digital startups incubator; the very place where he created Kik.

From this the University of Waterloo will now also establish a $1 million seed fund for student startups and intends to provide “at least 30 student ventures” with $25,000 as well as four months of office space, incorporation services and mentoring over the next few years.

Ted had this to say:

“With few responsibilities and surrounded by other talented minds, UW students are uniquely positioned to start world-changing companies. Unfortunately, few investors are willing to bet on young entrepreneurs, especially in Canada, so getting the start-up funds they need is a huge challenge. This fund is a step towards changing that.”

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, since meeting Ted personally I’ve discovered he is not only a stand-up guy, but a great CEO, whom other tech start-ups should take note from.

Knuckle-tap to you buddy.
