Fri March 11, 8pm: CBC Marketplace’s “Canada’s Worst Cellphone Bill” (The Sequel)

In January I told you that the CBC’s consumer watchdog program “Marketplace” was making a sequel to their ‘Canada’s Worst Cellphone Bill‘ piece. At the time of the last post they were looking for people to give them their stories of why they thought they had the worst cellphone bill in all of Canada. In their own words, Marketplace is going to “revist Canada’s cellphone industry and uncover more horror stories” with this new version of their analysis of the cellphone industry. I wonder if this means this will become a yearly event?
One thing to note before we continue: in the original post about the show it was scheduled for March 13th and it was the wrong date -
The show will air this Friday, March 11th at 8pm across Canada except in Newfoundland where it will air at 8:30pm.
(It actually is a bit odd that they even wrote March 13th to begin with as the show always airs on Friday nights. The only possible reason I can think of the wrong date being set in January is because someone at CBC forgot February only has 28 days and so figured that the 2nd Friday in March 2011 was the 13th.)
Moving right along, some of the ‘incredible cases ‘ being mentioned are a woman being asked to pay a cancellation fee even though she is being deported from Canada and a war veteran in his 80′s who’s pay-as-you-go minutes expired before he used them so he has to pay for more minutes.
The host of Marketplace will also be talking to industry experts (no names/titles revealed for the experts yet) about why Canada has the longest term for cellphone contracts on the planet as well as why Canadian providers charge penalties for breaking those contracts that are amongst the highest in the world.
Another thing which will be interesting to see will be when they ask the Canadian Federal Government’s Industry Minister, The Honourable Tony Clement what the federal government is doing to protect Canadians with respect to the telecommunications industry.
