Why There Will NEVER Be A ‘Perfect Phone’

Almost a year ago CellGuru wrote a post “The Search For The Perfect Phone” asking readers what their perfect phone would be and describing his own (at the time) perfect phone. While I am sure people’s preferences have changed since March 2010 as to what they want their phones to be able to do or what kind of specs they would want their phone to have one thing remains the same - someone’s “perfect phone” isn’t going to be anyone else’s “perfect phone”.
Beyond that, CellGuru’s post was about an imaginary phone which took aspects of the different phones/manufacturers on the market at the time and combined them all together to describe a phone that will never exist unless every phone manufacturer suddenly decides to merge with each other. People have often asked me why I prefer to carry my BlackBerry Torch and why I am using a BlackBerry at all and haven’t switched to an Android or an iPhone. I have a number of reasons why I prefer to stick with BlackBerry right now but if I told them to you, you might dismiss a number of them as not so important to you or what you expect out of your phone. This is the reason why I firmly believe there will never be a ‘perfect phone which everyone agrees is perfect for them.
An example I always give to people when asked about this which I think parallels this very well is the car. The car was invented over a century ago and still today how many makes and models of cars do you see on the road? Sure a lot of people yearn to get the hottest and fastest sports car out there but for most of us that car would not be reasonable for every day driving and would probably end up sitting in the garage more than being on the road. But to look at it in simpler terms; a plumber wouldn’t want to drive a Lexus around to their job sites and shove their tools on the beautiful Lexus interior, a doctor would not want to drive a 16-seater airport shuttle van to the hospital and their office every day, a suburban dwelling family with 3 kids and a dog wouldn’t go out and buy a two seater Smart Car as their family’s sole car. Cars have been around for quite a while and still there are certain cars suited to different roles in society. Sure, a lot of cars don’t have all the amenities that some other ones have but they serve the purpose they need to serve and that’s why people who buy them buy them. The same, in my opinion, is true for cell phones. There are people who own phones that can’t go on the internet and can’t run apps and they can only make/receive calls and text messages and that suits their needs. Someone like me or CellGuru wants a smart phone that is essentially a mini-computer. Often times I will write long emails or posts from my BlackBerry and for that I need a physical keyboard, a touchscreen keyboard just won’t cut it when you’re writing a 750 word blog post.
This is my reasoning why there will never be a perfect phone for everyone - what do you think? Am I wrong? Is there a perfect phone which you are using which hasn’t been ‘discovered’ by the masses yet? Do you think we will see a perfect phone for everyone in our lifetimes? Let me know what you think!
