When I dumped my iPhone 4 for a shiny Nexus One, the one regret I had was not having my movies and TV shows to stream from home. Sure, there were methods that could fashion a sling around the problem, but there was no cure for Air Video on Android.

Behold, Plex. Previously available for iOS, this PC/Mac-compatible streaming service serves up a delicious, reliable and high-quality stream from your home PC or Mac to your local smartphone of choice. Until now, that smartphone was an iPhone, but Plex for Android has just been released, opening up this world to the millions of hungry Android users.

Much like a TVersity or Orb, the Plex server is installed on your local computer, creating a database of all your movies, TV shows and music. The difference with Plex is in how it organizes your library. Namely, it does it intelligently. It scans the Internet for metadata, like an MP3 tag but for your visual media, and places it in an easy-to-use GUI.

Accessing your media over 3G takes a bit more work, but anyone who knows how to RTFM or forward a port can get it set up. Quality is dynamically adjusted depending on signal strength and whether you’re connected to local Wifi, remote Wifi or 3G, and it usually looks pretty good.

At the same time, this early release for Android leaves a lot to be desired in terms of stability. Media regularly wouldn’t play at all, or would stall for several minutes before buffering. Often the app would crash if I accidentally turned off the phone’s screen, and it always crashed after a show or movie finished. But I have faith that Plex is still working out all the kinks. It still beats every other app out there in terms of ease-of-use and attractiveness.

Plex is available in the Android Market for $4.99US, and in my opinion is worth every penny.
