Eye-Fi “Direct Mode” Announced - Card Can Now Upload Pics To Your Mobile Device

VentureBeat is reporting that today at CES, Eye-Fi has announced they are going to be releasing a new, and very cool, feature for a their memory cards. The new feature will allow an (upgraded) Eye-Fi X2 card - when it is still in the camera - to send the pictures from the camera to a smartphone or tablet for instant sharing. This new feature is referred to as “Direct Mode” and will, according to Eye-Fi’s press release, be available as a free upgrade to all Eye-Fi X2 cards later this year.
Said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi, “For anyone who has ever had to choose between taking great images with their digital camera and the instant gratification of sharing with a smartphone, Direct Mode is the answer. New technology in the card combined with a free Eye-Fi app on a mobile device means consumers no longer have to compromise between rich, lifelike memories and saving or sharing those memories from anywhere.”
As of right now, it seems Eye-Fi only makes an iPhone app for their cards. No word on an app for Android, BlackBerry (BlackBerry 6 or previous versions of the OS OR QNX for the PlayBook), Symbian, Windows Phone 7, or WebOS as of yet.
