Skype has now rolled out a new version of the app into the App Store, one with a pretty massive update for - video calling over WiFi AND 3G!

This means that now you can be sitting on your Mac or Windows PC at home and call a person logged on to Skype via the app on the iPhone and they can receive your video and broadcast video back to you as long as they are within range of a 3G cell tower (or a WiFi signal). The new Skype app is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch 4th generation as long as they have i0S 4.0 or higher installed. Receiving video calls is also possible on the iPod Touch 3rd generation and on the iPad (because they don’t have front facing cameras they can’t broadcast their own video).

In order to be able to make calls from a desktop to a devices using Skype for iPhone app the desktop must be running Skype for Windows 4.2 and above OR Skype for Mac 2.8 and above OR Skype for Linux. It can also make and receive video calls with the ASUS videophone. This of course begs the question of what will happen with Apple’s own FaceTime. There’s a link below in the usual place or just click on the App Store badge below to download the Skype for iPhone app from iTunes.

In celebration of this new app Skype put a new video on YouTube which we’ve linked below. It doesn’t tell very much about the app itself just shows people on iPhones calling desktops and vice versa and dancing.
