This is only a rumor as of yet but it is being picked up across the internet. However if this is true it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship and business relationship…it could also signify the end of the Symbian operating system for cell phones.

The report is sourced from the Russian Mobile-Review site and its editor Eldar Murtaz. In the article he frames the meetings and possible alliance as a desperate effort on the part of both companies “to stop an all conquering Android“. It says that “[d]uring the last month Nokia and Microsoft started discussing possible cooperation. This two way dialogue was initiated by new Nokia management. It is not only an issue of technological cooperation, but the whole range of Windows Phone models under Nokia brand will be sold through its channels.” There is an added aspect to this story - in September Nokia hired the head of the Microsoft’s Business Division, Canadian Stephen Elop, to be their CEO and President. As such, Mr. Elop probably still has ties and relationships with Microsoft and even information on their planed development which he may choose to exploit for his new company’s benefit. as well as his old boss’ for mutual benefit.

When questioned via Twitter that “[s]urely could be just discussions on closer cooperation around search, gaming, music and maps?” Eldar replied very specifically “[t]hey talked about devices.”

Is this the end of the Symbian OS and the beginning of a new mobile device powerhouse collaboration - the makers of sturdy, reliable phones (which is still Nokia’s forte) with the newest mobile operating system on the block (Windows Phone 7) owned by a company with almost limitless resources (Microsoft).
