ComputerWorld is reporting that at the 2010 International Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing, China Nokia is making some very big announcements about their plans for the coming year. According to the presentation by Nokia they have a busy 2011 planned for the Symbian Operating System. They intend to do incremental upgrades to the OS throughout the year so that it isn’t one big radical shift but when they are done the goal is to make the once world powerhouse operating system relevant again. The upgrades will include giving the user interface a new look and feel along with a more flexible home screen. This incremental but frequent upgrade plan is a shift from the way Nokia formerly did things, releasing their OS versions only very infrequently but with massive amounts of changes with each release.

During the first quarter of 2011 Nokia says they will be releasing an update which will include more than 50 enhancements, including a browser with a more intuitive user interface. According to the information given at the conference further changes to the Symbian will also include an HTML5 browser (unsure if the update mentioned above will mean the HTML5 browser then or if it is planned for later in the year) which will be upgradeable and an all around easier experience when updating software - both things Nokia users have been wanting for quite a while.

On the hardware side, Nokia plans to release models with 1GHz CPUs - the same speed as the iPhone4 is running currently - and more graphics memory 2011′s middle quarters. At the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012 is when Nokia plans on really releasing their powerhouse phones which will be built with dual-core CPUs and a “true zoom camera” (could that mean optical zooming?). Sounds exciting to say the least - I just hope by the time they get around to releasing these phones they aren’t an industry standard and are something to be talked about and generate interest.
