100 Richest Canadians of 2010 List Released, Mobile Industry Folks Take 6 Spots

Canadian Business Magazine has just released the 2010 edition of their annual RICH 100 List of the 100 richest Canadians and folks from the Mobile Industry are very well represented taking 6 of the spots - full disclosure, one of those 6 doesn’t live in Canada these days and wasn’t born here but he DOES have Canadian citizenship. Wondering who those 6 are and don’t want to wade through the list of 100 to find them? Not to worry, I’ve already looked through the entire list and picked out those 6 for you, read on to find them!
Starting at the ‘poor end’ of the list we have the brothers Pierre Karl Péladeau & Érik Péladeau who are the President & CEO and Vice President of Quebecor Inc. respectively. They are in the #85 spot on the list with a net worth of $0.67 BILLION (that’s $670,000,000 so it is nothing to sneeze at). Last year, they weren’t on the list at all and their wealth grew by 38.5% since 2009. You may be wondering how exactly they are connected to the mobile industry as “Quebecor Inc.” is not a name often heard in the industry. Quebecor Inc. actually owns Videotron Ltee. which launched their cellular network after winning spectrum in the 2008 AWS Auction.
The next mobile industry person on the list of richest Canadians is Victor Li who is the Canadian citizen I mentioned above who was not born in Canada and is no longer living here but is a Canadian citizen nonetheless. He is the Deputy Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. which operates cellular networks in 10 different countries around the globe and has 0ver 27.8 million subscribers as of 08/2010 according to their website. His personal net worth is measured at $0.83 Billion up %5.2 since last year.
After Mr Li the next four on the list’s companies and names should come as no surprise. In the #70 spot with $0.87 Billion is Douglas Fregin, Co-Founder and VP of Operations at RIM. Unfortunately for Mr Fregin, this year has been hard on his bank accounts as his wealth dropped %25.3 since 2009 but $870 Million is not exactly small change.
The final three on this list of mobile industry richest Canadians are also in the Top 30. Coming in at #30 is also a resident of Waterloo, Ontario, and frequently in the news trying to bring an NHL team to Waterloo, Mr James (Jim) Balsillie co-CEO of RIM with $1.81 Billion. Since 2009, Mr. Balsillie’s fortune, like fellow rich lister and RIM executive Douglas Fregin, is down %32.4 and he dropped from the #16 spot on last year’s list.
The last member of this list who is from Team BlackBerry and is Co-Founder and co-CEO of Research in Motion is Michael Lazaridis who is in the Top 25 with the 24th spot on the list. His personal net worth has been declared to be $2.02 Billion and although his wealth didn’t diminsh at the same rate as Jim Balsillie’s he did drop from the #11 spot he held last year and his fortune’s percentage of change since 2009 was -30.5%.
Finally, the top spot on the list for those involved in the mobile industry goes to <drumroll>….</drumroll> the Rogers Family who own a small company you may have heard of, Rogers Communications. The Rogers Family made the Top 5 of the list with a $6.02 Billion fortune giving them the #4 spot and had a great year, moving from 5th place on the list and their wealth growing by a very healthy 28%. With the recent talk of Rogers buying majority shares of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment from the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan I wonder where they will be on next year’s list.
In case you are taking a look through the list and wondering why I didn’t include the founding president of Videotron Ltee., Mr. André Chagnon who is #100 with a net worth of ‘only’ $0.54 BILLION (that’s $540 million) it is because he retired in 2000 and Videotron became a cellular provider after the 2008 spectrum auction. But I am including his name here because the company he founded is now in the industry.
