RIM Suing Kik Interactive For Patent Infringement

Oye, as if Kik wasn’t having enough issues as it is, RIM has decided to throw in the one-two knockout punch for good measure.
According to Crackberry.com RIM has filed a statement of claim against Kik Interactive Inc for patent infringement (see court filing T-1996-10). Odds are a US suit will follow shortly as well, adding salt to the already open wound.
If you are unaware of who Kik is; it is a cross-platform (BlackBerry, iPhone, Android) instant messaging service that went viral fast due to scanning the users phonebook/email address for other users on the platform. In a matter of weeks they hit and surpassed the 2 Million user mark, thus raising privacy issues with RIM internally (a company they had worked closely with until now). Due to this privacy concern, they were first removed from App World, then blocked by RIM’s push servers, thus crippling service for all BlackBerry users.
It’s upsetting to hear a company with so much potential for success, get the rug pulled right out from under them. To learn a bit more about who Kik is, read our interview with CEO Ted Livingston from a few weeks ago.
