Mobilicity launches 3.5G network in Ottawa-Gatineau

Wireless competition in Canada continues to heat up as Mobilicity launches in Ottawa today.
New national carrier wraps-up busy three-city launch – reaffirms its position against incumbent carrier contracts and expensive early termination fees
Ottawa, ON – November 18, 2024 – Mobilicity today confirmed it will launch its unlimited 3.5G network in Ottawa-Gatineau tomorrow, concluding an exciting three-day, three-city launch schedule focused on helping bring down the cost of wireless to over two million more Canadians.
Returning from Edmonton and Vancouver to the nation’s capital where he participated in the Canadian wireless spectrum auction over two years ago, Mobilicity Chairman John Bitove unveiled three simple unlimited plans and a market-leading $10 unlimited data add-on, making it possible to get unlimited talk, text and data for only $35 without a contract, credit check or bill surprise.
“If you like contracts, go to law school,” Bitove said in reference to an advertising campaign the carrier ran in Ottawa, last year. “But if you’d like to keep more of your hard-earned money, don’t lock in with incumbent carriers who keep short-changing consumers with surprise charges, extra fees and bad customer service.”
President and CEO Dave Dobbin said, “Consumers don’t need contracts – they need to be protected from them.” He pointed out how in nearby Quebec, the government is protecting consumers from incumbent carriers’ excessive contract cancellation fees with its newly enacted Bill 60, adding that more provinces should follow Quebec’s lead.
In the meantime, according to Dobbin, Ottawa consumers should do their homework before selecting a wireless carrier to make sure they get the right plan for their needs and they avoid getting costly surprises on the bill down the road.
With Mobilicity, the price of the plan is the price consumers pay. The company also offers a wide breadth of name-brand handsets and smartphones, starting at $49.99.
This week, it announced three new handsets onto its growing lineup: the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10 Android™ smartphone, the Motorola Spice™, Canada’s only sub-$200 name-brand Android 2.1 device, and the $99.99 LG Wink™ slider phone. All Mobilicity phones are sold without contracts as is the case with most consumer electronics.
Locations across the Greater Ottawa Area
Consumers will be able to purchase Mobilicity phones and plans tomorrow from over 20 local points of distribution, including its corporate store in Nepean, exclusive Mobilicity dealers, national retailers and other non-exclusive dealers, as well as online. The carrier will have over 30 local locations by the end of the year.
To find the nearest Mobilicity store, the company offers a store locator on its web site (www.mobilicity.ca).
