In the launching of their Naughty or Nice Holiday Campaign today WIND Mobile has released the results of a survey of mobile usage during the holidays.

“Only half of Canadians still plan to mail holiday cards this year,” the survey found. It also “revealed that the majority of Canadians plan to do their holiday well wishing by calling (70%) or emailing (66%).” I guess this means we are going to soon be explaining to the next generations what the heck the “Holiday Card” is that they’re talking about in old 90′s sitcoms.

Further, as an even bigger sign of the changing times the survey results showed that “18% would text message [holiday greetings]. Not surprisingly, 30% of 18-24 year olds would text compared to only 5% of people over 55.”

Many Canadians also anticipate using their mobile devices for more than just spreading holiday cheer:

• Nearly a quarter (23%) will use their phone to find store locations for their holiday shopping.
• 20% will use them to carry their shopping list as well as research prices.
• 19% said they would research product information and find deals and discounts.
• Surprisingly, only 8% plan to purchase gifts using their mobile device.

Beyond that, the survey results gave us the info that over 1/3 of Canadians expect to find Guests talking, texting or emailing during a holiday dinner this season. Further, that number jumps in Alberta at 44% as well as, again predictably, among 18 to 34 year olds at 43%. So consider yourself warned! Your family and friends are on the lookout for the old “pull-out-my-phone-for-just-a-minute-under-the-table” move and you’re probably going to get busted if you give it a try! You’re better off using the classic ‘going to the bathroom’ but you have to use that one sparingly before you start getting too obvious.

The survey, which coincides with the launch of WIND’s ‘Naughty or Nice’ Facebook App, also asked Canadians an appropriate question, “Would Santa say you were Naughty or Nice this year?” revealing that 85 percent believe the answer would be yes!

The new ‘Naughty or Nice’ Facebook app lets users invite their friends and social networks to hand down the verdict on them for this past year. The ratings will be tracked on the Naughty or Nice Meter revealing the consensus -sugar plum or scrooge? As well, WIND is then rewarding Canadians for getting in on the fun with a $20 handset discount. Pretty cool!
