Samsung to stop supporting Symbian

Effective Dec 31st, 2010, Samsung is cutting ties with the most popular OS in the world.
Really, this should come as no surprise as some other heavy hitters have since recently gone their separate ways as well. Android has paved the way for a new breed of Open Source development and slowly but surely the manufacturers are getting behind it.
The only consistently true Symbian supporter has been Nokia and even they (though still the highest selling smartphone manufacturer in the world) have begun shifting focus to Meego for all higher-end devices. So what does this mean? Despite the negative press (and limited functionality) Symbian has maintained its stance as the number one smartphone OS in the world, but will it last? And for how long?
I guess only time will tell, but I think we both know the answer.
