I’ll be pretty honest, there isn’t much to Super Mega Worm. You control a giant, 8-bit styled, tunneling underground worm and are tasked with killing as many humans as possible. Each level has a set number of kills required to advance, and each level adds a new challenge. Kills must be made at decent pace since your health bar will gradually decrease over time. Attacks by enemies will also lower your health. While humans restore health and advance the level, basic critters roam around for a health boost as well. Upgrades seem to come randomly in the form of EMPs and spitfire. There may be more, but I haven’t gotten them.

Control is two buttons, (EMP and a speed up button which turns into a fire button when above ground) and a slider that changes the direction and how fast your worm moves in that direction. The slider is mostly okay, but you’ll find yourself slipping off of it infrequently. The developers have noted this, and plan to add a more traditional input in a future update.

Gameplay is simple. Turn your worm so you launch out of the ground, then eat people. Using the spitfire attack, you can take down planes, parachuting soldiers and victims that are just out reach of your vicious mouth. Explosions can launch you really high into the skies where there are other kinds of enemies. That’s it. There are some incredibly satisfying moments, huge combos, soaring through air in slow-motion then crashing down with the force of a meteor.

The game gets a teenie bit repetitive as I found myself “surfing” from left to right, just mashing the fire button. The world is open, so you can go either way, but I found it easier to just pick a direction and stick with it. Despite the repetitive nature of the game, I found myself incapable of putting it down. My biggest problem is after getting to about level 18-19, when there are no more animals to kill and only two humans left to level up, I would run out time and not find anything to keep my bar up. I’m not sure where those humans go, but I couldn’t find any.

Game Center support exists exclusively in the form of leader boards. There aren’t even any achievements (yet). Bummer. Definitely better than having it’s own leader board, but it doesn’t utilize the system too well. All in all. Super Mega Worm’s visuals and classic arcade style gameplay make it a pretty good buy for $0.99. The next update will add new locations, new things to eat, achievements and more. Super Mega Worm will likely see a price increase in the next few days to $1.99 or $2.99 and the latter, is getting too spendy to recommend fully.

I’d suggest getting it now and help eliminate the human infestation. Like many others, I’m hooked.
