So I met Jim Balsillie, no biggie

If any of you are film buffs you undoubtedly know that TIFF 2010(Toronto International Film Festival) has taken over Toronto.
The movies are amazing and the streets of Toronto are buzzing with eager fans and media trying to catch a rare glimpse of their favorite celebrity in the flesh; It couldn’t be more fun.
Those following me on twitter have seen their timeline fill-up with Twitpics from my outings, arriving at each party ready to drink and mingle with the rich and famous (I lead a tough tough life I know). But, of all the events I have partied at and people I have met so far, the most exciting has been none other than Mr. Jim Balsillie Co-CEO of Research in Motion, Creators of the notorious BlackBerry smartphone. This year BlackBerry is a major sponsor to the festival, so their BBM advertisements can be seen everywhere.
Last night I had the privilege of attending the after party for Robert Redfords “The Conspirator”, hosted by Vitamin Water and BlackBerry (one of the many they are hosting throughout the week), and couldn’t pass up the chance to approach Mr. Balsillie to have a brief conversation with him. Ironically (but not surprisingly), the first question he asked me is what phone I was using; I confidently pulled out my BlackBerry 9700, to be met with a soft chuckle from him saying: “You are still using a Gemini”? I humbly corrected him, and asked “What about you?” , to which he responded “The BlackBerry Torch 9800″ (Yeah, I know, I was totally expecting some rare un-released device as well, lame). From there we briefly delved into the device, its new features, and more specifically his thoughts on OS 6 in general, to which he responded confidently: “It’s a step in the right direction for us”. He also asked me some questions about my BlackBerry, and why I was using it over an iPhone or Android device, to which I answered “The messaging is second to none, and that is what I use my phone for most”.
I didn’t have much time to really get into further details with him (I obviously had a million and one questions) as the conversation was very casual and off the record. Overall he is a great guy, who loves chatting about the empire he has built and meeting people who are as equally enthusiastic about his product as he is.
Stay tuned for more of my adventures at this years TIFF festival, the Twitpics are posted regularly
