My take on app pricing in BlackBerry App World

BlackBerry App World has been around for about a year and a half now and many of us have watched it grow. We’ve seen a wide array of prices for different apps but no app could be priced lower than $2.99, before the recent introduction of App World 2.0 and carrier billing. Many speculate the minimum price had something to do with PayPal but now that’s irrelevant. Over the last month or so, many developers have jumped on the bandwagon and dropped the prices of select apps to $0.99 or $1.99. Lets be real; $2.99 is a bit steep for a one touch flashlight on on your BlackBerry. In my opinion, apps are much more appealing when they carry a fair price tag.

In all fairness, when taking into account the time developers put into the completing and updating apps, they should make a fair profit. However, sometimes I can’t help but think some developers are cutting off their nose to spite their face. For instance, there’s currently a piano app sitting in App World with a price tag of $9.99! I’ve always wanted to play the piano on my BlackBerry but not for 10 bucks. I can’t help but think that app would sell loads and be in App World’s top 25 paid apps if the price was $1.99. Are you with me?

All in all I’m happy to see many developers are taking advantage of App World’s new pricing structure because they will most likely see many more sales and be motivated to keep developing for BlackBerrys. A healthy App World is needed for BlackBerry to grow and hopefully more developers see the light.
