Rogers HTC Magic+ users to get Android 2.1 today?

If you are one of the few who hopped the Android bandwagon with Rogers early, luck is finally on your side.
This morning via Twitter, RogersMary made the announcement that the OTA (over the air) update to Android 2.1 will start today for all users still struggling with the now-ancient Android 1.5 that comes pre-loaded on the device.
If you recall, the Magic initially came with stock Android 1.5 back in 2008, and when Rogers discovered a potentially-dangerous 911 bug (phone could not call out to 911 when the GPS was on) they forced all their users to upgrade their firmware. The new firmware, while still 1.5-based, was now given HTC’s Sense UI skin on top, but the core functionality of the phone didn’t change. It took months of hard work, but the new SPL (the core of the firmware) was finally cracked and rooted, and many Rogers Magic+ users (so renamed after the GPS debacle) upgraded to Android 2.1 (and 2.2, recently) as long as six months ago.
Anyone interested in rooting their device should BE VERY CAREFUL with this OTA update. It likely updates the SPL again, and will need to be thoroughly looked over before a safe rooting process is confirmed.
No word on if it has actually begun or not, but if you have stayed loyal to the Magic we’d like to know if/when you get it.
