To Live or Not to Live with Technology: Where is the Balance?

Last week, I found myself 30 km away from my BlackBerry charger and 48 hours from conceivable usage. As the waves of panic washed over me, I calmed myself with the thought of a convenient land line with call display at my service. Yet, what of BBM, texting, dm-ing, tweets, emails, and voice mails? How would I live without my red flashing light?

I did survive however and actually appreciated the time apart from my phone over the weekend. Yet, I felt slightly out of the loop and discombobulated. It was like being spun blind folded and then figuring out which way was north.

Okay, so I am over reacting, or am I?

In any case, a week later, my laptop broke down. I was paralyzed. The shock was a lot less after the phone predicament yet this time I could not work until it was fixed. A full fledged meltdown ensued eventually.

Others tried to console me by saying that sometimes life forces you to start fresh or look at things from a different prospective. It was equivalent to your data being wiped out on your phone. Instead of thinking your world had collapsed, it more like, well I did want to get rid of quite a few numbers anyway, this is just convenient.

Even my mother had told me frequently that my visits should not include my laptop. Perhaps she is right. Better yet, maybe this is a sign from Apple that I should jump on the bandwagon?

In any case, the whole experience taught me that I do need time apart from my respective technologies at least to unwind and focus on real life scenarios.

So my question to you is where do we draw the line between real life interaction and being glued to our technology? Or does a line exist anymore?
