Canada Loves its iPhones for Browsing

According to Admob, an online advertising research company, Canadians love their iPhones. In fact, 80% of mobile web usage in Canada is from the iPhone. Really? NO KIDDING! Compared to the US, which sits at 44% iPhone, 42% Android, this is unsurprising.

Android is really the only platform that rivals iPhone for quality mobile web browsing. But until recently, Canada did not have the number, nor the quality, of Android phones that the US does. The Droid has probably single-handedly brought Android’s mobile web usage up 20%. Canada’s version, the Milestone, didn’t arrive on Telus until February. Similarly, we didn’t have many low-end phones using Android except for the HTC Magic and Dream on Rogers, and the Samsung Galaxy on Bell.

Now that Android, thanks to Telus and Rogers, is getting a huge advertising push (love that hippo sticking its head out of the Milestone screen BTW) Android usage in Canada will likely skyrocket. That doesn’t mean it will reach the same heights that iPhone has; Canadians have a propensity for purchasing whatever Apple hawks, and the iPhone being available on all three major networks has helped immensely in its proliferation.

Rest assured, however, that in a year, these figures will be very different. Maybe not the half/half, but I’d say Android will make some serious gains. And, if the Webkit Blackberry browser proves as usable as we hope, then it will be the iPhone losing ground against both platforms. But time will tell.
