Being forgetful is a character trait most of us are accustomed to, thankfully there is finally an app to help overcome it. Honestly, how many times have you gotten slack for forgetting to return a phone call? Or, even after being reminded several times, forgotten to follow up on something? Let me introduce you to LaterDude Pro, the brain child of notorious Blackberry afficianado Fabian Heuwieser (best known for my favorite pre 5.0 OS app VibandRing and the more recent TyperSpeed) Later Dude Pro preceeds his reputation as a quality app developer. Once downloaded, LaterDude Pro or LaterDude (the free version) automatically embeds itself into your menu and becomes immediately accessible for basic use. Though, like ALL of Fabian’s creations its fully (and easily) customized. One of my favorite features of this app is the ability to save an email directly to your calendar without having to cut and paste the content, going into as much detail as allowing the full body or just the subject line.

Let’s give you an example of its effectiveness. So, you want to get reminded tomorrow that you have to contact your friend on his/her birthday? Simply go into the Address Book, scroll to his/her entry, press Menu -> Later, Dude! to set up a call-back reminder. The phone number and name is then already set in the LaterDude Pro application. Yeah, that easy. And being a Fabian app it’s reliable and virtually bug free. Later Dude Pro speaks directly to your:

• Call Log
• Messages/email Application
• SMS Application
• Address Book List

Here are the noted differences between Later Dude (lite version) and Later Dude Pro

LaterDude:

LaterDude, the “lite” version, is a simple way to create call back reminders directly from your call log screen. Simply highlight the number/contact you wish to call back and press the menu button. A popup appears, asking you to pick a callback time (choose between 5/10/30 minutes, 1/2/5/7/9/12/15 hours, 1/2/3 days or 1 week). After you have made your selection, you will then be presented with another screen. At this point you can edit the reminder subject, location, and any additional notes. You can also edit the call back date and time, if you wanted to be more specific. Once you have finished, click save and presto! Your reminder has been created. The reminder will now be available for viewing and editing in your calendar.

LaterDude Pro:

Need help with other reminders? LaterDude Pro diggs further into your other means of communication. This isn’t simply a cell phone people! It’s a BlackBerry! This version acts a bit differently. I could access “remind me later” from my call log and from my messages. Instead of a simple call back reminder, I could also create a general Contact reminder, Email reminder or SMS reminder. I can still choose reminder times, but could now choose to be reminded in 2 or 3 weeks additionally.

Because Later Dude Pro uses your native Blackberry calendar all entries appear as typical alerts and remind you with the same tone that you have become accustomed to. It is most effective when you are in a hurry because it saves the “copy and paste” time of inputting the information. If I had set an email reminder, I could have the email address entered into the subject. Then I could open the reminder (taking me to the calendar entry), highlight the email address and use the menu button to prompt me to compose an email.

Pros:

• Create reminders quickly
• Utilizes your native calendar and alert settings

Cons:

• Lack of support on older series blackberries

All in all I think in a (app) world full of some fairly useless apps this one really stands out and I encourage you to download the lite version to see for yourself. Your contacts will appreciate that you are more “on top” of things and you will feel a sense of relief with the subtle reminders. There is a reason why it was nominated for “Best Utility App of 2009″.
