When it comes to instant messaging clients for the iPhone OS there are tons of options. This week a new application from a familiar name in instant messaging came to the iPhone. Meebo has now entered the App Store as what I would consider the best free IM client hands down.

I have been a longtime user of the Beejive application for iPhone and have fully switched to Meebo. Meebo offers the all the functionality that Beejive does and its free. Beejive costs $6.99 and for a serious IM user it was worth it. I say “was” because now that Meebo has stepped onto the scene, I can’t find a feature in Beejive that makes it worth the $6.99 over Meebo’s free price tag.

If you already have a Meebo account then setup is simple. Meebo loads your settings for you so you can get to chatting right away. If you’re new to Meebo then there is a little setup required but it’s quick and painless.

Meebo supports all the major IM networks including AIM, Yahoo!, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, Facebook, MySpace and 100+ that you’ve most likely never heard of. The one network I can see users be slightly perturbed with the app not supporting is Skype. But that’s what you have the Skype app for.

Meebo supports push notifications when the application is not active so you never miss an IM. It also integrates perfectly with the web version and saves chats for easy searching of full chat histories. Multiple chats are featured in the application with a simple swipe to the left or the right users can flip through conversations easily. Landscape mode also comes packed into Meebo’s expansive feature list.I seriously can’t say enough good things about this app. You’re going to just have to go and try it out for yourself.

Can anyone find a flaw with this app? Any alternative that surpases Meebo’s features? We want to know.

-You can’t send/receive photos, inline or otherwise.
-In my case, every message pushed gets double up’ed and I get two notifications for it.
-The notifications won’t clear from the springboard icon, so I have 999+ on the badge.
-The notification sounds cannot be changed
-Individual clients can’t seem to have different status levels…, you’re either 100% available, 100% away or 100% offline.

Beejive and IM+ both have all these features and more, but that makes them very buggy and unstable. While I have IM+, Beejive and Meebo, I prefer meebo cause it’s quicker, and more stable…, messages always go through.

    Clark,
    Greg from Meebo here.
Are you still having trouble with your notifications getting doubled and not going away? We haven’t seen any reports like the problem you describe. Are you using another push notification application that might be interfering?

We have heard other requests for changes to the notification sound and will look into it for future releases. Do keep in mind that we intentionally tried to avoid the bloat of other IM apps out there to keep it quick and lightweight.

As far as individual presence for your accounts, Meebo does support that, both at meebo.com and on the iPhone app. From the “Accounts” tab, just select the account you want to sign off and it will open to a new screen with individual presence options.

And sending/receiving photos….. just keep an eye out for an update really really soon ;)

Hope that helps, and thanks for trying our app!
If you like it, give us a nice rating in the app store :)

    cheers,
    Greg
